Massive quake hits New Zealand

Glad to see you're alright, Candlelight. I hope everyone else is okay!

Dunedin where I live is just shaken. Christchurch where the quake occurred sounds like a real mess. Roads cracked, water and sewage pipes severed, building facades have smashed down.

CNN is reporting quite a bit of damage, but no deaths and mostly minor injuries. Let's hope it stays that way.

At some point you're actually going to have to name the islands. "Auckland" and "Christchurch" are awesome names, "North Island" and "South Island" not so much.

So far it seems that Christchurch, the city nearest the epicenter, is the only place to suffer major damage. And no serious injuries have been reported. Must have scared the hell out of the sheep, though!

Speaking as a resident of Christchurch...

Hell!

Official recording stands at 7.1. 4:30am this morning I wondered who on earth was rattling my bed. That rattling turned into a very loud, very violent quake.

There is significant damage in the local area as well as the CBD, which has a 7pm curfew this evening.

Very surreal day.

We're exposed to natural disasters all the time through the media. But when the footage of collapsed buildings, torn bridges and cracked roads are buildings you've been in, bridges you've crossed and roads you've strode down a hundred+ times... well. It makes that footage a lot more personal and shocking.

No fatalities... so big thumbs up there.

Talk of an equally - if not larger - rumble is not what anyone was hoping for. But whatever will be will be... I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

This post is useless without pics!

Indeed; seems a minor miracle. Best wishes to our Kiwi friends.

I'm glad you're okay. Have you personally had any property damage?

We were very lucky. Did a tour round the suburb this evening. Power polls askew, roads ripped up... unreal. A work colleague has had a thorough look about the city and it's bad. The CBD was cordoned off today and will likely remain so till at least Wednesday. We've had tremors all through this Sunday afternoon and there are gale force winds tonight. I imagine a few buildings will suffer that were already on the verge of collapse.

And down south we've had one of the worst plane disasters in our history with the loss of 9 people. What a fucked up week.

If one can draw a positive from this... the recession is over for tradesmen! Plumbers, drain layers and builders are gonna be booked up. Also good to see the community coming together. A little concern for your fellow neighbour goes a long way.

It looks like a bad disaster movie. The price tag will be enormous.

Additionally, it is damn lucky it happened when it happened (4.30am). If it had unraveled three hours earlier town would've been packed. There were collapsed buildings along one of the main strips.

Eerie stuff; thanks. I know it's irrational, but I don't think I'd be comfortable playing about in those fresh crevices as a child is doing in a few of the images.

The islands have Māori names:

I approve of this.

At least there was no price in lives from the earthquake. A bad week indeed. I hope everything gets fixed and back to normal quickly.
