Marvel Puts Runaways Movie on Hold

Despite having a director already attached in Peter Sollett (of “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist” fame), it looks like Marvel Studios has decided to put the breaks on their live-action adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s “Runaways” comic book.

Word is, Marvel has lost a lot of enthusiasm for the formerly fast-tracked kiddie superhero movie in the aftermath of Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick Ass” (and no doubt that film’s less-than spectacular box office had a little something to do with it as well), along with the fact that they have plenty going on for the next few years, what with “The Avengers” and “Captain America” and all-manner of big comic book guns taking up their time.

Honestly, I’m not sure if you can blame Marvel. “Runaways” will be based on a little-known comic book that while popular with fanboys, isn’t exactly “Captain America” or “The Avengers”, i.e. there is no name recognition. “Kick Ass” had similar fanboy buzz and geek love, but that didn’t really translate into box office draw. On the bright side, while it started off slow, “Kick Ass” has gone on to make $96 million worldwide from a $30 million dollar budget,

Looks like Marvel is finally cutting back on comic movies.

Kick-Ass didn't have superpowers, though. Runaways would. Still, it's an understandable decision. Best not to saturate the market too quickly.

Also,

Looks like Marvel is finally cutting back on comic movies.

Yes, I too think that the movie studio spun-off to film adaptations of its comic book characters has been doing far too many comic book movies in the handful of years since they've been founded. They really ought to order up some romantic comedies and historical dramas.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
