News Martin-Green Answers Disgruntled Fans

Then why are you saying there needs to be a reason for it or it's diversity for the sake of diversity?

Because it is. Anything not adding to the story itself is extra.

If you want planet Earth represented accurately by racial demographics over half the cast would have to be Asian. If there were 10 main characters, 6 would be Asian, 2 whites and 2 blacks. You have to enlarge the crew if you wanted "other". And because it's Star Trek, someone's gonna get shorted because you have to have an alien as well. That would be your perfectly diverse crew. Which, if the stories were good, shouldn't matter, but then it starts getting obvious what they are doing and it distracts. Even action movies can have to many explosions.

Jesus Christ I'm not arguing against diversity. sheesh.

Uhura was poor writing, why was she on the ship? She was black and A WOMAN. Why couldn't have there been a white guy with shit on his head doing her job?

As long as they don't take a well known character from a previous show and change him/her around then there shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise it's a new show, new era and new characters. Let the writers be creative and play.

Worked for Battlestar Galactica.

I wish the fans (more so elsewhere than here) could just relax and allow themselves some clarity so they are in the best position to enjoy the show if it ends up being as good as we all hope.

I can't figure why people won't stop blathering on about all this shit. Too many white guys. Not enough white guys. Too much advanced tech. Not enough advanced tech. Uniforms are too blue. Make it more like GOT. Make it nothing like GOT. The Klingons don't look right. Make everyone gay. Don't make anyone gay. Make the Captain a xenomorph. Dear God, enough already! Haha! :)

Just watch the damn show without all this frigging inane, useless baggage and see what comes of the experience.

I'd just like to see a character like myself on the show, something that the vast majority of you likely take for granted. I've never gotten that before, not even in the books and they've probably had a Horta crewmember by this point.

You mean you're not a dolphin?

Yeah Star Trek casts should be diverse. The end. No more to say on that since it makes sense both in-universe and out.
However I do hope that unlike some shows/films, having a diverse cast won't strangle those diverse characters from being as nuanced and interesting and unfettered as the white men in the cast. If I have to see a generic 'we're trying to make sure she's a role model' character that's just good at science and rolls her eyes at jokes or just - the dreaded - Strong Female Character, I will be very upset. Likewise for various painfully undeveloped characters of different sexualities/ethnicities because they have the burden of Representation and are therefore scrutinised to the point they can't come alive.
