British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw ("Spooks," "Doctor Who") has landed the female lead opposite Boris Kodjoe on J.J. Abrams' "Undercovers" at NBC. Abrams and Josh Reims co-wrote the pilot.

The project revolves around a domesticated husband (Kodjoe) and wife (Mbatha-Raw) who are re-activated as CIA agents after years of retirement.

Abrams also will direct, marking the first pilot he has helmed since "Lost" in 2004.

Good for her. The only problem I have with "Undercovers" is that it is the exact same premise as "Undercover", another series about a married CIA couple, that aired back in 1991. That one had Linda Purl in Gugu's role, and had John Rhys-Davies as the show's resident gadget man/assassin.

It was a great show which was torched after about 6 episodes due to the 1991 Gulf War. It was pulled off the air because of the war, in part because the show launched a two-part story involving the lead-up to the war which became rather moot. In fact I vaguely recall that part 1 of the story actually aired the night before the first bombs fell on Baghdad. Anyone wanting to see how it ended had to wait about a year when the two episodes became a made for TV movie.
