Married women in Starfleet

Palamas was pregnant with Apollo's child (at least according to the novelizations), Tomlinson and Angela Martine were married and possibly were going to stay on the Enterprise.

It was stated by McCoy towards one female officer that she would find a guy and step down from Starfleet. (I forget whether or not that was Carolyn Palamas he was referring to).

So, 'in-universe,' what would be the protocol for married women, especially if there are 'little ones' that come along later?

I like TNG's having families stay together; of course, once the Dominion War arc came along--as well as the Borg threat--that somewhat changed...

However, I'm focusing this question more on the TOS era...

Well, there's clearly no fraternization rules, so I guess kids are the big distinction; once newlyweds want to start a family, deep space is probably not the place to be. Married by itself seems okay based on "Balance of Terror."

Yeah, there wasn't any room on those Constitution class vessels, unless there were families we didn't see...

I'm guessing there were families on starbases, though.

Shove the kids out an airlock and back to duty!

No?
Sorry.

Only the bad ones, I guess....
