Hollywood isn't any more out of ideas than they were yesterday, a year ago, or 50 years ago. Then, as now, money talks. If you want to make a movie about a talking dog, you can get more butts in seats by using a dog that has some pop culture recognition already.
I haven't read the funnies in years and I recognize Marmaduke instantly, and I'm sure that will work enough for a lot of people to get them into the theater.

I still read the comic regularly. Nothing i've seen in the two trailers is any sillier than what I've been reading, with or without Marm talking.

I'm ok with the "talking animal" thing but Marmaduke a chuckle-at-best one-panel comic strip based movie? Is Ziggy or Family circus getting a movie next? And then changing the "premise" of the strip by having Marmaduke talk?
It's not much to get upset over. It's not like they're trying to stay true to the strip or anything.
They purchase the name for brand recognition and easier marketability, that's all. The writer of the strip makes a cool million or two. It's not some evil grand master plan to fuck up the integrity of Marmaduke or some beacon from heaven declaring the unoriginality of Hollywood. It's all about selling a product, that's all.
