Marketing fails!

OK, this is one that I noticed a while ago but can't seem to let go. What is Airborne subliminally saying about it's customers?

Got any others?

Are you contending the package imitates the cover style of the "...for Dummies" series of books, despite the different shade of yellow at the top and bottom, no angle of the border between black and yellow, use of a serif font where the books use a san-serif font and lack of "Dummies" in text that resembles yellow chalk on a blackboard?

Nearly as unreasonable (in my opinion at least) as Reeses claiming the color of their wrappers deserves trademark protection.

I mean no disrespect to real school teachers, but IMHO any marketing campaign that thinks it's relevant that a school teacher created a pill is an automatic fail. Unless the teacher is, like, a DOCTOR and such.

Yeah, I don't get it.

Yeah, it wasn't until I read RobertVA's post that I had any idea what was going on. But the design, colours, and layouts are only superficially similar. The most obvious similarity I can see between them is that they use a very similar typeface in their body text (possibly Frutiger\Verdana? I can't tell, it's too small) but it's a pretty common font in marketing\design.

They aren't similar enough for it to ever occur to me to compare them. Maybe I just have a bad eye for these things.

I didn't get it either. Saw no appreciable similarity whatsoever.

Sure, there's a black stripe in both ads, but that and an empty sack is worth the sack.

I don't think the 'for dummies' series could be considered a marketing fail nor do I think airborne was a marketing fail. We may think both are stupid, but I think they achieved there goal of reaching there markets.

It is kinda hard to think of a lot of marketing fails off the top of my head "new coke" probably and M&M not letting ET use them, but most marketing fails failed because they where not memorable.

It's more the laziness of the Airborne marketing department. Let me try and illustrate the similarity here with another one of their boxes:

Maybe the teacher plays a doctor on television.

See, that's actually a lot more noticeable, because the colors and arrangement of text are more similar. If you'd posted that one originally I would have "gotten" it.

Also, the Pontiac Aztek is one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen. I remember the first time I saw one, I was in the car with my wife and I just blurted, "what the fuck kind of car is that??"
