Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment thread

OK, seeing as this line of conversation threatened to drown out the Ricky Gervais thread last night, here it is in its own thread.

Firstly, to explain what we're on about:

We're talking movies of course, in particular any fans out there of the Kermode and Mayo Film Reviews show, as featured on BBC Radio 5 Live every Friday afternoon.

For me, Mark Kermode is one of the funniest film critics out there, raving about sometimes little-known or unloved films he feels deserve to be seen (and not in 3D :p), and otherwise ranting about the worst new releases of the week in merciless and brutally honest fashion - a style that has now been referred to as "kermodian."

He has his own list of favourite directors (Herzog, Lynch, Friedkin) and actors (hello to Jason Isaacs, who was at the same school as him) as well as a hate list of people in the industry (apparently Danny Dyer has threatened to beat him up :rommie:) and certain movie franchises (namely POTC) so unsurprisingly many of his opinions are biased and outspoken and of course not representative of those of the BBC in general. :p Combine this with hilariously awful impersonations of famous people and effervescent waving of (by his own admission) his big flappy hands, and you'd have to agree that his witterings are more often than not more entertaining than the films themselves. Hence the term "wittertainment."

When Jonathan Ross left The Film Programme, Kermode has so many fans out there who wanted him to take over - Kermode himself has flatly refused the role as (and I agree) that he would not be suitable for such a programme. Personally, I also felt that if he did agree to go, he would have to take Simon Mayo with him as main presenter - a few fans dislike Mayo for his sometimes snarky interruptions of Kermode in full flow, but I feel he's the other important component of the programme, a comic foil there to keep Kermode in check. (If you managed to see their review of "FRED: THE MOVIE" especially on the webcam stream, you'll see why. :guffaw:)

The BBC seem to agree with me on the Mayo assessment, as they not only allowed Simon Mayo, who by now had left 5 Live to take over the vacant Radio 2 Drive Time slot, to keep his Friday afternoon radio slot with Kermode, but they expanded what was originally a segment of his old 5 Live show into a whole two hour programme (breaking news permitting) - something that continues during weeks when neither Simon nor Mark are available and they end up getting the (less entertaining) Boyd Hilton and Nigel Floyd with Richard Bacon.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

Don't always agree with him, but I love Kermode's style.

And he's completely right about 3D!

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

There are some films which he didn't regret seeing in 3D - Toy Story 3 and (I think) Street Dance 3D were two where he didn't find the 3D distracting (and that's about as high a praise you can get from the man on the subject ).

Incidentally, I've yet to try his "3D rectifying glasses" trick to make a 3D flick appear in 2D again.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

I haven't watched Claudia Winkleman on Film 2011 because I really really can't stand her. I believe she has a real film critic to do the actual work of the programme, whilst she presumably blinks away with her hair in her eyes. It's a shame because Wossy was good in that show.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

Yeah but didn't Ross just get other people to go watch a lot of the films as well?

I love Kermode's rants about 3D!

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

^^ Mark Kermode would admit it if he had not seen a film, and would refuse to give a verdict on it (even if it was on general release that week) until he had seen it - whether press-screened, bought tickets with his family, or otherwise. In these cases, when doing movie top 10s he would invite listeners to contact them with their own brief reviews if they had seen the movies before he did, and usually he'd be able to give his verdict the following week. I guess viewers of The Film Programme would expect nothing less than an expert verdict on the latest film releases (but instead they have Claudia's... thank you I'll be here all night), which is probably another reason why he wouldn't be suitable for the show's format.

Now, if he brought his 5 Live show's format to television, that would be something I would definitely see.

btw, this is still my favourite 3D rant, from his video blog Kermode Uncut:

That was very good. I've never heard of him before.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

I absolutely love the show/podcast, incidentally I'm listening to the Green Hornet one now.

I only started listening in September and wonder why I never listened earlier. I think it's because I had the wrong impression of Mark Kermode from only seeing bits and pieces and never hearing him out properly.
There's a lot of little quirks to his review style that make him my favourite film reviewer nowadays. I tend to understand where he's coming from on most films even if I don't agree with his overall opinion at least, and that makes him a trustworthy critic in my eyes.

Simon Mayo of course the show wouldn't be as good without him, their little back and forths make it all the more wittertaining.

^Brilliant.

I'm just listening to the BAFTA nomination podcast now.

Yeah I'm somewhat similar. I think for a long time he was just the pretentious guy who wouldn't stop talking about the Exorcist!

He still keeps going on about it.

btw, those podcasts since the start of September 2010 are available on an "indefinite" basis, as opposed to being deleted after 7 days as was the case in the past - which can only be a good thing. There are some awesome rants in that selection too.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

Hmm I've found 185 episodes dated between March 2005 and September 2008... I have a lot of listening to do.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

^^ I recommend the review of "Good Luck Chuck" from somewhere in October 2007 as a good starting-off point... it was my first podcast from those guys.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

I think I'll make a start tomorrow, while playing bejeweled or Plants vs Zombies or something like that.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

Kermode's rant about Sex and the City 2 is possibly the best review of a film I've ever heard.

Re: Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's FIlm Reviews - the wittertainment th

^You mean when he wasn't going to rant because he was resigned to it?
