Mark Gatiss to play the 3rd Doctor at Christmas?

Interesting idea. If Gatiss is playing The Third Doctor, that'll ruffle some feathers for certain. Agreeing with your supposition about The War Games, I wonder if all of The Doctors will show up now...

I'd imagine they'd leave it to the ones who are dead.

The alleged title of the Christmas Special may be a clue.

If the Doctor is revisiting events leading up to previous regenerations then it looks like The War Games is being reinstated as Two's final adventure.

I haven't read that book but I haven't heard good things about it. I can see why you're worried.

It's a terrible book, which is why I was surprised to see a blog post from Barnes & Noble a few days ago recommending it as a good tie-in novel.

The best part of the book, imho, is when the eighth Doctor arrives during the sixth Doctor's trial and acts as the sixth Doctor's lawyer during the events of "Trial of a Time Lord." That's fairly interesting, if you like Gallifrey stuff.

Now I wonder how Ian Levine's private animated adaptation of The Eight Doctors is progressing.

To be honest, I never cared for the whole "Series 6B" idea anyway. It really doesn't make much sense when you think about it.
Time Lords: "We banish you from Time Lord society to the planet Earth where you will be forced to live in exile!"
Doctor: "In exile?"
Time Lords: "In exile!"
Moment of awkward silence.
Doctor: "So is this when I go all kaleidoscopey face to represent my regeneration?"
Time Lords: "Hell no! Before we force a regeneration on you, we require you to go on a series of adventures and missions for us and the greater good of Gallifrey."
Doctor: "And if I complete these tasks, what reward do I get?
Time Lords: "Reward?"
Doctor: "Yes, do I get to keep this form? Perhaps be allowed back among Time Lord Society?"
Time Lords: "Hell no! We will still force your regeneration and banish you to live in exile!"
Doctor "In exile?"
Time Lords: "In exile!"

I like 6B, but I'd be equally fine with "just pretend they don't look older" in The Two Doctors if it means we get a regeneration for the 2nd Doctor in the upcoming Christmas special.

You know how some "fans" have proclaimed to never watch the show again after Jodie Whittaker took on the role?

Well, I can safely say, I'm on the very verge of saying that for the Gatiss' casting. I mean... Seriously? At the very least...

CAST SEAN PERTWEE, FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!!

The way I always saw it is, the Second Doctor's timeline was War Games, then Spearhead. But then, because the Time Lords became nastier during Tom Baker and Peter Davison's runs, they interrupted, and thus prolonged, the Second Doctor's life by plucking him away from the trial, during the time he was to change faces (thus why we never see him change his face to Pertwee, on-screen). The CIA use him for whatever missions they deemed fit, and then the Doctor escaped them, as per that comic from the '60's. Seems feasible that the Doctor at that stage of his life might've thought the CIA would've helped him roam free in the cosmos and keep his body if he did them some chores, but that obviously never happened.

That makes sense (inasmuch as anything in Doctor Who makes sense). We already saw they have a procedure for doing that kind of thing with Clara in "Hell Bent."

Interesting retcon. I guess it works, though truth be told I've grown too attached to my re-interpretation of the scene. Which, in case no one figured it out is partially based on the re-enactment with sock puppets that's included as an easter egg on The War Games DVD. The "In exile?"/"In exile!" bit especially.

This special is supposed to bring us back full circle to Capaldi's first on-air appearance, right? Joining all the Doctors to save Gallifrey from the final battle of the Time War? So it doesn't necessarily have to revisit regenerations at all. It could be as simple as One and Twelve visiting Two and Three (using the actors seen above) at any point in their timelines while Ten, Eleven and Warrior recruit all the rest.

Weren't Two and Three both supposed to have used the wooden 'secondary console room' before Four got his hands on it? I recall him finding a recorder and a dusty velvet jacket there.

Wow, that's surprising. Wouldn't have expected that particular character to have made it to the Time War, let alone past it. But I suppose if anyone could make the Doctor accept changing, and get him to feel/look young again, it'd be that one...

Back to give the process another little push...
