Mark Dailey Is Ill With Cancer

Dusty Ayres

Commodore
For those of you who don't know who he is who aren't from Toronto, here's a recap:

Mark Dailey is an American-born Canadian television journalist and announcer.

He is the host of 11 p.m. weeknight CityNews newscasts in Toronto, Ontario, and a prominent continuity announcer voicing interstitial program announcements on Citytv.

Dailey was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, studied law enforcement at Youngstown State University, in Ohio, worked as a police officer, and became a crime reporter for stations in Ohio and at CKLW in Windsor before moving to Toronto in 1974. Dailey has worked at Citytv for 30 years.

As a voice actor, Dailey has voiced characters in the animated series Medabots, The Ripping Friends, Beyblade, Grossology, My Dad the Rock Star, Spliced, and others.

He has also appeared in several Canadian movie productions including David Cronenberg's Boozecan (1994), Claire's Hat, The Life Before This, and Childstar.

Here's the announcement of his illness:

I was reluctant to post this out of respect for his privacy, but I was advised that it would be OK by my friend and mentor, Brian Thomas who we all know from CHUM-FM. Brian and Warren Cosford are sad to tell us that our very good friend and colleague Mark Daily is fighting against double lung cancer and is now in a coma. Mark is a great guy. I worked with him at CHUM-AM as a cub reporter in 1974. Mark is and I say” IS” one of the great voices of CKLW, The Big “8”, CHUM-AM, the first News Director of Q-107 and CITY-TV and so much more. We walked our dogs together every morning in The Beach in Toronto and spent our mornings for years talking about everything from radio to the colour of dog poo. It’s what you do on dog walks. Mark is “The Voice”. During our walks I can tell you he never had a bad word about any of us. In fact, he followed each of our gigs and was excited whenever any of us landed something new. Like you, I am very sad to hear about one of our great friends and a true giant in our business. This is not the end. Please join me in saying a prayer for my friend, his family and your friend and to everyone he touched….. "Everywhere".

Mark was also the voice of Space: The Imagination Station from 1997 until the breakup of the CHUM company and the buyout of Space by CTV Globemedia.

Does that not give you chills?

RIP Mark

Wow, what a shock. I love this guy's voice work on City TV. I'm so used to that "City TV...everywhere" line from him, it would be weird to hear it from anyone else. His movie intros were a staple of my childhood too and I loved those as well.

I really feel like I took him for granted now. I never imagined him getting sick...the voice just had a quality to it that made me imagine him as immortal. He had such a great voice, I'm surprised he didn't do more high profile voice over work in animation after "The Ripping Friends".

Mark was also The Voice of Star Trek on City TV, and so I will post the video of him announcing TNG and DS9:

Wow, that's sad. Death of a local institution.

I've always wondered - why did they record the TNG promos anyway? I assumed Paramount would have supplied their own.

I guess that the City TV people though that having Mark do it would be cooler, and they were right. These of course, are the station promos.
