Mario Maker

I just had kind of a big fight with my ten year old self.

32 year old me: Hey, 10 year old me! Guess what game I just got! Mario Maker!
10 year old me: Wait, you have a game that lets you make your own Mario stages? And share them with friends?
32 year old me: Yep! Awesome, ain't it!
10 year old me: NO FAIR! Why can't I get that?
32 year old me: I dunno. For one thing you couldn't really share them over your 9600 baud modem.
10 year old me: I could have made the levels and invited my friends over! THIS SUCKS!
32 year old me: Come on 10 year old me, can't you be happy for me?
10 year old me: You don't even have the free time to really use it! I could get three entire games worth of levels out in a year! You're lucky if you ever finish a dozen with your full time job.
32 year old me: Yeah, I bet you would have put out a lot of levels, but...
10 year old me: What?
32 year old me: Well, I know right now you THINK you are really creative and have great level ideas. But the fact is, your brain isn't fully lateralized yet and you probably would have just copied existing patterns and added cheap stuff.
10 year old me: MOOOOMMMM!

Anyone else getting started making Mario levels? Interested in sharing?

To All You Most Excellent Gamarians (Gameites?, Gamians?)

Happy Birthday, Mario!!!! he hits the big 3-0!

Hoo Hoo!!!!

I've made three levels so far. I'm more interested in making fun levels that require a little platforming skill but aren't overly difficult to complete. So far I have zero stars while those levels that require no skill at all (or even any input from the player) are getting starred like crazy.

I'd post my level codes but I just turned off the system and don't feel like booting it back up, when I get back into the game I'll be sure to post them here.

Platformers are my favourite genre and I love Mario, but as someone primarily interested in playing the levels of others now is the absolute worst time to buy the game. Automatic Mario is neat, but not $60 neat. I'll wait for people to get used to the game and for the quality levels to start coming out.

Just made my first one last night, tinkered with it and it turned out ok.

I made a few practice ones before this, but those aren't going online.

Here it is:

Back to the goomba
CABC-0000-003B-41F7
Super Mario Bros. Underground
Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate

I like the erase option in the game, it's much more intuitive than LBP's imo.

YES.

but levels are so hard to make :(

What are you having problems with?

We should exchange levels in this thread. I like creating levels that are challenging but not cheap. Like, might require good timing or have a tricky puzzle, but won't just randomly throw six bowsers in the middle of the road because screw you.

I made three levels last night. My mind is flooding with ideas, just need to get all the stuff opened up.

Of course, coming up with ideas is the easy part. Play testing and balancing is the excruciating part.

I've been winging it so far when making courses, I have been play testing them to death though, just to make sure they aren't overtly difficult. I've got four levels that if you play them in a certain order could feel like playing through a Mario World (the last level is a Castle stage).

I'm nowhere near my WiiU right now, and still don't have my codes written down, but I promise next time I get on I'll record the codes so I can start sharing them.

A lot of my first few tries was basically exploring what you could do and how enemies behaved. Like, in my most recent level I was planning on having three lakitus at varying heights. Then I realized that lakitus have very single-minded AI, automatically either follow you the whole level from any height once you reach them or turn into 'Skip over the level' rides. So I've learned to only ever use lakitus if I specifically want the cloud to be used as a ride.

A lot of it is also "There's nothing happening here. I should add at least something here". Or "Maybe this is a good place for a tricky maneuver that you don't NEED to do but might be fun for experts and has a 1up reward".

Finally finished a course I'm actually proud of.

Edit: Another small disappointment, you can't center two fire poles on the same block.

Two more levels I made that I like enough to share:

Up And Down 3EC5-0000-003F-2F46

This one is for experienced players but I think it's fun.

Koopa Kavalry 0A9C-0000-0048-3A48

This one isn't as hard but it has a cool theme. My first SMB3 level.

Random_Spock, did you mistype your level id? It's saying course not found.

Yea I did. Sorry. I'll go and fix that.

Ignore my original post, I accidentally mistyped the code for my level. Here's the fixed one, along with a new one I made tonight.

Title: Back to the goomba
Level ID: CA8C-0000-003B-41F7
Theme: Super Mario Bros. Underground
Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate
Scrolling speed: none
Description: A nice trip back to the past with a twist. Slow down is a theme here. Don't do that, and you might just mess up.

Title: A Little Loch Ness
Level ID: 3057-0000-0048-9E88
Theme: Super Mario Bros. Underground
Difficulty: Intermediate to Medium
Scrolling speed: none
Description: a nice journey with a meeting with Nessie. Beware of the enemies within.

Oh, just ideas :) and I lost my stylus for the gamepad >_> the actual maker itself is well designed and thought out - just wish I could use more of some of the basic stuff.

Oh I see. Do you have a Game Store or Wal-Mart or other store nearby so you can buy a replacement. They run around $9 or so last time I checked. I think for the multi pack. Runs around $4 for one straight from their site. Here's a link to it.

Yea it's a bit frustrating, just onto my 3rd day and some more stuff unlocked. Including Lakitu ;).

There's a way to unlock everything all at once, or at least quicker than a few items a day.

From what I read, play in the Editor for a bit until you get that message that new items will arrive the following day. Then start spamming the hell out of blocks (place some down, copy them and just start pasting them all over the place), after a while you should hear a truck sound and a message that will pop up saying it's Sooner than expected. You can keep doing this to unlock everything on the same day.

I only did it the first day, and I felt it was too much work so I let everything unlock naturally (the last of my stuff just unlocked this morning, I can't wait to tackle sub-levels).

Cool. Might try that out.

Not a huge fan of the 10 lives challenge. Stuck on the SMB 3 level with the pow block (p switch) and it's really annoying :scream:.

Anyone beat that level yet?

The way to speed up the unlocks involves, whenever you see 'New package available on this date' you set ahead your console's internal timer.

I'm choosing not to do that though because it allows me to learn how to use each new feature individually.

Yeah, the 10-Mario challenge isn't too bad. You'll be wishing for that level again when you get to 100-Mario Challenge on Expert :p people are making some BULLSHIT levels out there.
