March Madness Memories

I love this weekend more than any other sportswise. That Belmont-Duke game yesterday made me think back about some of my favorite moments in the tournament aver the past 30 years or so. Here's the first one I thought of: 1992 NCAA Duke beats Kentucky in OT. That clip is about 10 minutes long, so it will take a few minutes to download.

It starts out tied at 98. Then there are 5 lead changes, a star fouls out, great passes, incredible nerves, a controversial coaching decision, two of the most storied programs, two of today's coaching titans ........ that game had everything.

The two I remember the most was last year when Duke lost in the first round to VCU. That was a great day because it was the first round and it was a hell of a game. The second was George Mason's run a few years ago. A team that people thought would lose in the first round ending up in the final 4 because they played one of the greatest games ever against UCONN. Last night, the Duke game was really the one one that was the most exciting. All the other games were either kind of dull or laughers.

Though the UK-Duke game was a nail-biter, it didn't do a whole lot for me. Maybe because I dislike both teams so much that besides seeing a close finish, it mean nothing to me (plus, it's two powers, so it lacks the drama of a Cinderella pulling a huge upset like Valparaiso and that last second shot).

Some of the moments I remember best?

Bryce Drew hitting that last second shot and Valparaiso pulling off the upset over Mississippi in 1998.

Cleveland State upsetting Indiana in the first round in 1986 (that was a great one!)

Princeton almost upsetting Georgetown in the first round in 1989.

NC State's upset over Houston in the 1983 final.

Villanova's upset over Georgetown in 1985.

UNC and Jordan beating Georgetown ending with that terrible pass in 1982.

Michigan and the Fab Five and Webber making the awful time out call in the championship game vs UNC

1979 - Indiana State vs Michigan State. Jordan vs Bird.

Loyola Marymount beating defending champion Michigan 149-115 in 1990 after star Hank Gathers had died in the conference tournament.

Washington losing to Connecticut on Rip Hamilton's buzzer beater.

Washington losing to Connecticut in OT in 06.

Sigh...

One memory that came to me this morning was Bobby Knight's last championship game. It was against Syracuse, and things had nto been going at all well for the Hoosiers. Can't recall what it was that set him off, but at one point Knight proceeded to rant at I think the scorers table. He slammed his fist down on the folding table, and the handset on a nearby phone just catapulted off.

Christian Laettner's shot against Kentucky will always be #1 in my mind.

That was incredible.

After Louisville won the first of their national titles, in 1980 I think, the next year they looked like they'd do it again. Then in a second or third round game, they faced Arkansas. A Razorback guard named U.S. Reed hit a shot from like two thirds the length of the court to win by one.

Even better than Princeton's almost upset of Georgetown is their actual victory over UCLA. :techman:
