March Art Challenge - Sojourner

OK, I have felt derelict in my drawing duties due to my on going addiction to World of Warcraft, so I decided to enter this month's contest.

(The following is pure fiction for the sake of the contest.)

The basis for this is that in 1994 an episode of DS9 was produced as a "backdoor" pilot for a new show. The show would be based on a starfleet vessel. It was to be in B&B's terms "as grim and gritty" as DS9 in terms of story direction. The first season (if the show were picked up) would have spent alot of time in the "Badlands" dealing with the Maqui.

They asked Rick Sternbach to design a vessel "more militaristic, smaller and leaner" than E-D. It should also have a slightly retro look evoking an older ship than E-D. These are some of Rick's "WIP's":

This first one are what amounts to "spitballing" ideas with simple forms.

This second image is a simple render of the 3d forms for presentation to B&B in order to get thier thoughts on the direction he was headed in and which one he should develop further if they liked what they saw.

Well, if nothing else, this got me to install the new Sketchup 7.;)

I never drew any ship concept for Voyager that had a circular saucer or those sorts of connections between the saucer, nacelles, and engineering hull. You might be confusing someone else's sketches with my early ideas. If you have an image of any of my original doodles, I could identify where it came from.

Or should I read this as being a total fantasy as if I had been asked to design a new ship?

Eh, hehe, Hi! Yes, in the spirit of the contest. The history I gave is purely fictional. Sorry for the confusion! I have now added a disclaimer. I don't want to add another "rumor" for the internets to feed on.

More progress and refinement of forms. Nacelles and pylons have not been developed at this stage and are only place holders.
