Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Building

This is breaking right now up the street from me. Luckily, I live in the opposite direction, but I hope that the situation is resolved quickly and peacefully.

A man with what appears to be an explosive device on him has taken at least one hostage at the Discovery Building in downtown Silver Spring, Montgomery County Police said.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/local-breaking-news/crime-and-public-safety/discovery-building-being-evacu.html

I have to wonder what this person hopes to accomplish by this?

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

I'm watching this unfold on the local news- he's been identified, and sounds like an environmental nut. He apparently had been banned from approaching the building because of disruptive protesting.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

They'll probably make a Discovery Channel special about it.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

Okay, I'll admit I was a total dick: I laughed when I read this part in the Washington Post Report.

Update 3:10 p.m.
Several stores in downtown Silver Spring, including Toys R Us Express, Pier 1 and Borders, have closed their doors.

Don't know why, I just did for some weird ass reason.

And the TBD report is just moronic in one spot, IMO. Reprinting a e-mail sent out to Discovery staffers:

The children from Discovery Kids Place are safe and with their teachers at...[edited by me]. Parents should meet their children there and go home for the remainder of the day.

Hey good ideal, post the location of the staff's kids. Cause we know for sure this nut doesn't have any buddies, or that some opportunist might not try something stupid.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

I doubt he has many buddies. He's a left-wing environut who doesn't want the Discovery Channel glorifying the production of filthy, human babies that just grow up to pollute. It's pretty hard to be against babies and still have friends.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

I work for Discovery, and was fortunate enough to have the day off. My phone just exploded around 2:30pm by text messages and phone calls. I'd been running errands all day and had no idea that any of this was happening. I work in the company's Production Center which is around the corner and down a block or two from One Discovery Place/HQ. My building is currently in lockdown mode but my co-workers appear to be safe. I know that at least some of my colleagues at HQ made it out. The whole thing is still pretty scary and confusing.

The suspect is some unstable nutjob who tried to organize protests of the company in the past. He was kind of a joke before... not really a threat to take seriously. Today that has changed.

Well, I'll grant ya that.

The guy's past one froot loop short of a bowl... he's officially overflowed the bowl. Here's his manifesto...

I find it amusing this is going on this long... if I were in a room with this guy, just walk behind him, grab his head and twist hard. Dead. End of drama, lol. And he'll get what he wants... one less filthy human in the world, lol.

EDIT: They just announced they finally got him, and the hostages are safe. Good that I won't miss Cash Cab now. :D

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

His demands are listed here.
Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

Oh fuck you crazy-man. The Squirrels must die! They impede the rise of the Chimpmunk Imperious!

In all seriousness, I really do hate fucking squirrels.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

Maybe he's angry with the lack of a scientific focus on the Discovery Channel.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

According to my local news, the hostage taker is dead. Luckily, he's the only one who died.

My company has strong ties with Discovery and our contact in DC told us about this a few hours ago. Glad everyone made it out OK.

When I first saw this thread, I wondered if you were OK. Glad to hear that you (and it appears everyone else but the crazy guy) are OK. I realize you don't normally work in that building, but you never know. Overall, just a crazy situation.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

I'm glad to hear everybody is safe. It's a shame this guy's mental illness wasn't caught earlier, before he endangered people and got himself killed.

What a shame they didn't have a macho hero like you in the room.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

Thank goodness this was resolved. It's been a crazy week in DC.

Aye... isn't it? :D

Seriously... all this negotiation stuff gets me every time. Number one, these people ought know by now that all the "negotiation" is, is a delay tactic to keep the suspect distracted while they paint him with laser targets. Number two, the suspect ought know that there's no way he'll get anything he demands, because as soon as he sets foot outside, he'll either be shot, arrested, or both. Number three, these suspects are beyond the point of desperation, and as such, are usually more afraid than the hostages. Hostages or people inside buildings in these situations need to use that psychology... use it against the suspect, and catch him off-guard, and put an end to the situation.

The suspect is banking on the fact that the hostages will be too scared to attempt any measure of heroics, but the hostages all have lives to get back to... a reason to stay alive. The suspect is beyond that point.

Re: Man With Possible Explosives Takes a Hostage in the Discovery Buil

The problem is that a scared suspect might detonate a bomb he might not use otherwise because someone threatened him. It's like a cornered snake. It doesn't want to bite you, but it still might.
