Man Builds himself a robot companion

This is actually pretty neat, Seems like he is going to build himself a robot on his own that will be pretty comparible to the ones other places spend tons more money to build.

"Fem-bot" Aiko, who has cost £14,000 to build so far, is a whizz at maths and even does Le’s accounts.
Le, a scientific genius from Brampton in Ontario, Canada, said he never had time to find a real partner so he designed one using the latest technology.

Not quite in uncanny valley territory...yet I'm repulsed all the same.

£14,000?!

Sounds like he's doing an amazingly accurate job. She'll take him for a lot more than that before she's through. At least it's unlikely he'll be stuck changing any diapers or paying child support.

The last guy who did this got flayed by a vengeful witch. Does he really want to take that chance?

He's done a pretty good job for doing it all himself and for the amount he has spent. It won't fool anyone, but it's capabilities are quite good, considering.

What I find amusing, is that he did it because he "didn't have time to find a real partner". He would be married by now if he had spent half the time looking for a partner as what he has spent on making one. I think it more likely that he is intimidated by women and felt more comfortable making one instead. I kind of feel sorry for him.

The article mentions that he spent so much time working on the robot that the stress caused him to have a minor heart attack. In the video, he asks what time it is and Aiko responds that it is 4:00 AM in June 2007. It's 4:00 AM and he's working on his robot, and a few months later he has a heart attack. I don't think it's just a coincidence.

Headline was incomplete, should read:

"Man builds robot companion, then evicted from his mothers' basement apartment."

His idea of a normal conversation is apparently her being quiet unless he asks her a question.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he probably doesn't have the social skills to have a healthy adult relationship.

Sigh...

True, but he seems to be quite talented with software programming.
Hey, it's a start!

Apparently he's very good at talking to machines. Now he does it in a more literal fashion.

He may be able to make some more headway into human computer interaction.

he doesn't NEED a healthy, adult relationship... he's got a robot babe!

i did find it ironic that he said he didn't have a companion because he didn't have enough time to find one, then later said that he had been working on his robot companion so much it gave him a heart attack!

i guess for him it was faster and easier to build a robot girlfriend than actually go mack on some ladies at a bar
