Making STAR TREK Too Real at Home

What does an 800 pound gorilla do? Whatever it wants. Same thing with Trekkies, in the privacy of their own household. But ... what I'm wondering about, really, is that these publicised attempts hard core fans make to simulate a STAR TREK environment at home can only be counterproductive, to that goal. I mean, everything's got LCARS on it, the Living Room's laid out like the bridge of the Enterprise-D, the Dining Room looks like the Officer's Lounge, they're in full STAR TREK regalia, all of the time ... but ... there's no Federation. No Starfleet. And it's so easy to hit that brick wall of Reality that it seems, to me, at least, like it wouldn't take long before the escapism it initially provided, itself escaped. I don't get that, their setting themselves up for one hell of a disappointment.

Seems like a straw man argument without examples. And are these people genuinely trying to pretend that they live in Trek's reality, or do they just love Trek so much that surrounding themselves in its trappings makes them feel all warm and fuzzy?

You silly, silly man. There will one day BE a Starfleet, and when there is, refitting my house to be an outpost will be much easier than building one from scratch, since most of the equipment and uniformed personnel needed are already here. And they will instate me at my chosen rank of Commodore for having the foresight to prepare like this. Just you wait and see!

I helped a Vulcan get back to the future, what time traveler did you help?

Those look pretty damn cool. If they've got the money and talent to pull stuff like that off, more power to 'em!

Damn shame about that first guy losing the apartment, though.

Yeah, if that's your thing, and you have the time and money to do that, then why not?

Personally, it's not my thing, but I'm certainly not going to look down my nose in judgment at people who want their homes to look like sci-fi settings. Live and let live.

I would love to have a replica of the sets to play around in. But I'm content to have a home in this century.

He said being brought back to reality might be a big letdown. And it could be. You do all that work, keep that high going as long as you can, then you're in your space ship that doesn't actually go anyplace. You didn't literally think it could, but still... sitting in your captain's chair, doing a crossword puzzle...

That's correct. They try to immerse themselves into this completely fictitious world, by adjusting their intimate surroundings to match up as near as Humanly possible and all it does, finally, is bring home the reality that all it's only so much set-dressing. None of it works the way that STAR TREK's gadgets are shown to work.

The microwave with the LCARS all over it doesn't download tasty treats out of thin air, via simple voice commands, for instance. It would only serve to remind that STAR TREK's only so much make-believe that doesn't translate, in the Real World. But certain STAR TREK props around the house, based on the show, do work, I think and are very cool, left as-is.

Like Picard's standing fish tank, for example. In that instance, you do get the reality of what's onscreen, almost in its entirety. The only difference being the setting it's shown in, but that is all. But try to go all the way, in every way, in STAR TREK mode and the "reality" starts to fall apart, a bit.

If they can afford it and it's not affecting their lives to a detriment I say why not. I have the same feeling about cosplayers, though I have no interest in playing dress up myself.

People are responding to criticisms that weren't made, I think. Suggesting that the experience might not be fulfilling isn't a "judgment".

Maybe one room in a house might work, not a crucial room you use every day. You feel blue, you hang out in the Bridge in the guest room. Then you get out soon, and go back to the real world.
--------------------
The Bridge makes for a terrible Iiving room. N o one faces each other. The flight deck from Blake's 7's Liberator has a nice hang-out zone, though.
