Technical Research Centre of Finland and Lappeenranta University of Technology have developed technology to produce edible protein out of CO2 and electricity. The researchers estimate the process could be as 10 times as energy efficient as photosynthesis.
The process is still in its early stages, so the yield is low: 1 gram of protein takes about two weeks to produce in laboratory. The next step is pilot production, where they will try to increase the yield to such quantities that commercialization is possible. It will be interesting to see if the technology could offer a solution to world's hunger problem.
