After battling a years-long illness, Maggie Stables has passed away. She will be best remembered for her portrayal of the Sixth Doctor's companion Evelyn Smythe.

Big Finish has confirmed the news.

Evelyn Smythe is my favorite Big Finish companion and is one of their finest creations which was brought to life with exquisite performances by the wonderful Maggie Stables. Thank you for all of the wonderful stories, Maggie. You will be missed.

Very sad news indeed. I had hoped she might be able to make an appearance in NuWho, even as a different character, but, I really adored her as Evelyn. Of the Audio Companions I have heard very much of, she is my favorite, and she definitely was very different then the typical Companion, since she was an older woman, which was a breath of fresh air.
