Mac Time Machine

What kind of recommendation can I get for an external hard drive to use as a backup for my Mac Mini? I'm planning to upgrade to Snow Leopard in the next few months and would also like something I can use for regular backups.

Naturally, once I get an iPod, I'll offload my entire music library.

I've had good experiences with the My Book brand. If you're primarily using it for backup, go for one of the brick-sized ones, not the paperweight-sized ones. The smaller ones seem to be less reliable in my limited experience.

I'll second that.

At work we have twelve or more of them (Studio Edition for FW800) in almost daily heavy use, and they haven't let us down yet due to no hardware related failures. One got corrupted once, but the data could still be saved.

The one and only LaCie we once bought failed though.

But at home I have several brands like LaCie, WD or some other self-built cases, and none have failed yet.

My personal recommendation is to go with Western Digital, either the already recommended My Books or the My Passport portable line if you don't want to have to plug anything else in.

My ultimate recommendation is a Drobo, of course.
