So its the holidays, and my cousin wants me to play starcraft with him. I have the disc but it does not install, saying "Classic mode cannot start" or something like that. What is this classic mode and how do I get it to start?

This is OSX 10.4.11 on my PPC laptop.

I don't know much about macs, can anyone help?

Classic Mode refers to running the entire Mac OS 9 within Mac OS X. If you don't have Mac OS 9, you're out of luck.

You should have an install disc with a big 9 on it with all your os install discs. You'll need to install that to allow classic to run. It's basically os 9 running inside os x.

Well I certainly haven't got that with me now, and I don't know if I have one at home or not. So I guess I'm out of luck

Thankyou both for the info. :)

You can go to their website (was the game Aspyr? Can't remember) and download a Mac OS X patch -- it lets you load and play the game in carbon.

Really? I shall have to dig out my patch! I do believe sir you have just wasted many hours of my time. I'll thank you later!

I found that the OS 9 system on a Mac is entirely contained within the "System Folder" folder.

I was able to just copy the OS 9 "System Folder" folder from my old laptop onto my newer computer that came only with OS X installed, and then "Classic" mode was able to start and I can again play the original "Tomb Raider" game on my newer Mac.

(This, of course, depends on having another Mac with OS9 already installed, and being able to copy the "System Folder" folder to the newer Mac.)

Note: The OS9 "System Folder" folder is not to be confused with the OS X "System" folder. You must have both in order for "Classic" mode to start.

Not true if your system came pre-installed with 10.4.

Jadzia, you should be able to find it on one of your system installation CDs (assuming you still have them). I think it's on the one with all the printer drivers; if not it will be on the disc that has all the developer packages on it. Pop them in and launch the installer and see what's available. It would be called Classic I believe.
