Lower Deck Tales: Beyond Acheron

Hey, thanks for the great comments everyone. Greatly appreciated.

I was always a fan of those psychological thriller type Next Generation episodes where Riker or Troi or whoever would apparently go crazy or see things that weren't supposed to be there. Dark, moody stuff usually.

Also, I always wanted to write a story in which a character would say: "But soandso has been dead for twenty years!" Obviously I had a blast writing this.

I'm glad people liked it. I was a bit concerned that it would be too obvious or too obviously M. Night Shyamalan inspired. The last thing you want to have happen in a story like this is for everybody to figure it all out on the first page.

Lower Deck Tales will be a label, if you will, to which I may return in the future to write short stories about junior officers and other raw meat on the lower rungs of the food chain. Maybe I try my hand at a comedy the next time around.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

This was an excellent story with a twist that utterly surprised me. I honestly didn't think Savannah was killed, although, now that I think about it, the clues were all there--but they were so very subtle--very nicely done.

Great ending, CeJay. I was clueless until the last chapter, great job of keeping the reality of the situation under wraps. :) Wonderful character analysis in a somber and poignant story, very well executed.

CeJay,

This was a haunting (pun somewhat intended) story, with a great twist, though I sort of suspected something like that during the funeral scene, right before the reveal. You created two very real characters and meshed them with your crew, and made it feel natural like they've been in your stories all along. I also like how you used the Klingon War as a backdrop. I think the KW got mostly short shrift on DS9, except for a few good to excellent episodes.

Thanks guys. I'm glad everybody enjoyed this story and that the twist was mostly unexpected.

It's a lot of fun to work with junior officers because you can do so much more with them than with your regulars which are usually expected to survive ... usually.
