Although I think Tom Bombadil was pretty awesome I would probably have excluded him too. He would simply have added too much comic relief (immediately after the hilarious birthday party and meeting Merry and Pippin scenes) when it was time for the film's more dramatic and serious turn, being attacked by Ringwraiths.
