"...[W]e are proposing a cancellation of the Constellation program at NASA even while making other investments in long range [research and development] there, which again is a significant step," Orszag said in response to a reporter's question about the tough choices Obama faced in drafting his 2011 spending plan.

Obama is an idiot. Not only will this cost US prestige in the field of space exploration but it'll also kill a ton of jobs in Florida and around the country.

As I said in the other thread, it's better to develop a stable space infrastructure than to go for the PR on a one-shot moon landing (again). Hopefully that's the plan here.

And getting an entire industry set up around privatized space flight is going to create many more jobs than will be lost at KSC.

I know you're hoping some big time defense contractor can privatize bombing the piss out of the peaceful people of the planet Venus. I'VE SEEN YOUR POST! :klingon:

Yeah, it might be bad news for other U.S. states, but it is certainly good news for California, where the bulk of the private space industry is located. Some win, some loose.

I SHALL NOT STAND FOR THEIR PENIS-SHAPED WAYS!

And CA could use more help than most.

You should send that line to Obama. He can use it when Floridians ask him about breaking his campaign promises to support NASA.

NASA is getting more money.

Essentially, it is. Some of that money will go to maintaining the ISS instead of scrapping it in 2016 (which would be an unbearably stupid waste of resources) and alot of it will go to supporting private companies developing civilian space flight programs like SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace.

As has already been pointed out by smarter people than me, SpaceX will be able to put a man in orbit at least a year before NASA has a shuttle replacement ready, so having NASA invest in aerospace companies makes a certain amount of sense.

Obama is increasing the NASA budget by $6bn over the next five years. Some $3.2bn is going to science research grants and missions to study the moon, stars and planets.

The Constellation program was over budget and behind schedule. And, to quote the fact sheet, 'NASA’s attempts to pursue its moon goals, while inadequate to that task, had drawn funding away from other NASA programs, including robotic space exploration, science, and Earth observations'.

NASA is also going to heavily invest in modernizing KSC's launch facilities creating...DING DING DING...jobs in Florida.

You know who likes facts? The Venusians.

Say... where have you spending your vacations, comrade?
