Lost in Space comparisons

The new shots of the bridge, and other things I have read, have me worried that XI may follow in the footsteps of the Lost In Space movie from a few years back. They wen't over board, and I mean really over board, with all the zippy-zappy CGI and 'bridge set' as well in that movie. The plot was way over the top. Lost in Space was a cheesey show, no doubt. But I hope JJ realizes that TREK doesn't need shiney new doo-hickies and brightly lit sets and all that. What is going to make this movie good is the plot and writing.

Right now, like Lost In Space--Speed Racer--Wild Wild West, all I see is a lot of money being thrown on shiney new stuff for my eyes to look at. And as those other movies prove, it doesn't matter how much you spend if the people your are aiming this movie at DONT get into the story.

Yes, I'm sure he realizes that.

Lighting is one thing I think they got right so far. TOS and TNG were very brightly lit, and it makes sense from a practical standpoint to light things brightly at one's workplace. It always bugged me that Voyager would go dim at Red Alert, precisely when they needed to see all their controls clearly. Also, we're only looking at pictures. They have nothing to do with how engaging the story is.

Yep..which I totally agree with.

As for the post before yours? I think the lighting, as we see it now, is how it will be. It has 'speed racer' 'lost in space' written all over it..the word is gaudy..

:wtf:

They had self-illuminated controls/touch-screens. How much light do you need to see your already lit 'Fire'-button?

I must confess, I had a Lost In Space vibe from the production design on the bridge.

I quite liked the production design in that movie ;)

When you type in a dark room from your self illuminated console is it always easy to see expecially if the console is causing you eyestrain. Lighting isn't just so you can see. It so you can see better for a longer period of time. Your eyes need a certain amount of light to function properly.

True. But in a dimly lit room you see self-lit buttons better. Hence the lower light settings during Red-Alert.

Fair enough, on both points, but maybe there should be a moderate level of lighting instead of the room being lit primarily by the display screens. I also don't see why they'd change the lighting at all, I don't think lighting would drain that much energy that they'd want to divert to weapons and shields. I just think that if someone falls from their station in the dark, or if a medic needs to cart someone off of the bridge they'd want a little more light.

I know the real world reason is probably dramatic tension, but from a practical standpoint I really don't think it needs to be quite as dark as they had it on Voyager. I think the Defiant (except when cloaking) and the NX-01 are good compromises.

Good - if I go to see a Trek movie i want to see a lot of shiny new stuff to look at. That's what they should spend their money on.

The shipboard sets of the "Lost In Space" movie were fine. These look even better.

Lost in Space, huh....

...Lacey Chabert in a TOS-style miniskirt and go-go boots works for me (and I mean Lacey today...not the under-age Lacey from Lost in Space)

If the new Trek movie only captures the spirit of the original HALF as well as Speed Racer did (in reference to its own originals) it will be more than fine.

Oh crap. If Sulu or Chekov climb up on some jet-ski looking contraption to fly the "E" through some breaking-up planet, I'm running for the exit. :scream:
