Looking Busy at Work

I'm too busy at work to be bothered about looking busy at work.

This is the way it was with most of the jobs I had.

The one exception was the night shift at a nursing home when I was a teenager. I 'worked' from 11pm to 7am. The only other staff in the home was one nursing sister. I doubt we really had more than 4 to 5 hours work to do and often less. I had to start preparing breakfast at 5am but it wasn't served until the 7am staff came on. Some days I did a big pile of ironing and I had to answer the night bells but that wasn't more than maybe six a night (I think the old ladies all got sleeping pills). The sister had even less to do. She would disappear into the pharmacy room and work for an hour preparing the medications for the next day but apart from that and answering the bells I don't think she had anything lese to do most of the time (except for a time when many of the ladies had the flu and then we were run off our feet).

Because there was only two of us we didn't have to look busy. We would spend time talking or playing cards.

For this we got paid double time :)

Usually I "look busy" by "being busy" I've always something to do, plan, or work on. I could be like the other jack holes around and play hacky-sack in the office, but....

Yes, well... I would like to point out that I work for a recruiting/headhunter company. It is my job to make sure all paperwork is completed when someone is hired, to be the point of contact for people out in the field who need assistance, and to release people from their contracts if the client requests such a thing.

Needless-to-say, business is slow. I'm not doing onboarding paperwork (the stuff when someone gets hired) because our recruiters haven't had a hire in over a month. None of them... not one hire... over a month. The people out in the field are very cautious about not losing their jobs, so they are well behaived. So, I don't have counsel or fire much these days. Everyone is pretty much on a barebones staff right now anyway, so no one is really gettting fired.

I'm booooorrrred, but I have to look busy because everyone seems to forget that I can only be as busy as the recruiters are successful. Right now, that's not very. But, if they can't me surfing, they're like, 'oh, you're slacking on the job, huh?'. What I want to say is, "No, dumb ass, because you can't make a hire for a 9.00 dollar an hour call center position selling cosmetics to old women and older queens, I don't have shite to do." But, that seems harsh.

 You think?

(I'd take that job, btw - can I work from home? :) )

I wish, but the President insists I remain onsite 'in case something happens'. Look, the only thing that 'could happen' is for an irate employee to come in brandishing a gun. In which case, I have no desire to be here. There's only one exit/entrance to this place. :shifty:

One place I temped at had the worlds slowest printer so I would pop onto the Job centre website while I waited.

the place I used to work at used a system called Trac which is an open source project tracking system with wiki and subversion integration :D
anyway . . . it would have all our current projects listed and I'd just have that open looking at a ticket, or my ticket list, and then have trekbbs or google reader open in another tab. I got really good at listening for footsteps and hitting ctrl+w

the annoying part came when I had to track my time . . .

When you try pressing ctrl-w, not thinking of what it does, it's time to sleep.

Good night.
