Looking at 'The Sopranos'....

As I mentioned in another thread, this show has a big group of characters who are pretty f**ked up...but for some reason I've caught this show off and on to see what will eventually happen to certain characters. (Kinda like for Oz).

I've jumped around on DVD's, but watching pretty much all episodes of Season 6....

I can't really say I 'like' any of the characters because everyone has ties to the mafia, or is backstabbing, racist, etc....

However, I do think the actress who portrays A.J.'s temporary girlfriend--Blanca--is hot; also, I think Meadow is pretty. (And I even think--whathisname--Artie Tucco's wife has something going on in these later seasons)...

Michael Imperioli is pretty cool, too....(as an actor)...

Some things I do find funny:

-An outburst or gesture of anger is made by a character and a few mafiosos (Paulie, Silvio, Patsy, etc) cry out: 'Ohhh!'

-The talking with the hands, or the 'hand'.... (You've seen it in other mafia-related movies and shows).;)

Looks like you really got to the heart of what this show's all about. Well done.

Yup, the show has a little more to it than just funny Italian characters...there are some seriously profound commentaries on life, society and the human condition.

And some funny shit too, I can't deny that, but it's very much secondary to what the show is trying to get across to the viewer.

I watched the whole series recently, when I was sick with the flu.

Overall, I found it depressingly nihilistic.

Mind you, I also thought it was a truly great TV series. It was very well-written and well-acted, with some very memorable moments.

And as a film noir fan, I don't mind a bit of nihilism, in feature-film-length doses.

But when you watch The Sopranos one season after another, back-to-back, the way I did, it just becomes too much after a while. It really got me down.

In the end, as Livia says before her death: "It's all a big nothing." Cut to black. Roll credits.

Ohhhhhhhh!!!

Love it. My three closest friends were all big Sopranos fans, and I finally got round to seeing it all via DVD about 18 months ago. Now whenever we see each other / meet up, we always greet each other by saying "ohh!!!", and just generally use it all the time.
Its now happening at work too, where my best friend there has recently finished watching it too, so we now both say it all the time at work too. It just feels great to say, ohhhh!!!! :D

Ever listened to the DVD commentary on the Futurama feature "Bender's Big Score"? John DiMaggio keeps doing a Sopranos thing for the lulz: "Hey, Skip! How about we send the kid down to BajaFresh - get us some Hypnotoad? OHHHH!!". Imagine it's Paulie saying it....:D

Yeah, love the show - and yeah, it can get bleak and depressing. But that's OK, given the subject matter.

I love this show to death. I've watched the first three seasons a couple of times.

There's something in Tony's situation that seems familiar to me, that rings as authentic. Which is odd because I'm about as far removed from a Mob boss as you can possibly be. But I do tend to think of the world as a hostile place and I tend to feel conflicted between what I want to do and what I have to do, and Tony is an excellent analogue for that. Gandolfini's performance in the series is one of my favorites by any actor, anywhere.

I think a lot of the supporting characters are great too. Paulie, Silvio, Uncle Junior, these are great, great characters. Conflicted characters are interesting characters.

Indeed! Great show, all around.

Although, I must say, I just wanted to kick AJ off the edge of a cliff by the end of the series. What a whiny little tool... :p

Cheers,

AJ was so whipped with Blanca...and she tore him down...

I do have to say(again)Michael Imperioli is the shit! (I've seen his recent 1800 vodka commercials; and he is going to be in a new cop series 'Detroit 1-8-7')....

Excellent actor....
