Long Term Federation Goals

From watching Enterprise and seeing a bit of the early years before the Federation was founded and going up to the 24th century where we might assume Bajor will become a member I've wondered if it was safe to assume that eventually the galaxy would be one giant Federation? Maybe only someone like the Borg or Dominion would hold out.

Since they just want to explore, be in peace and make new friends it just seems like eventually everyone would join. Even the Klingons softened to the Federation as the years droned on. Of course I'm not saying it would happen overnight but if they could get Tellaraites, Vulcans, & Andorians to get along then I suppose anything could happen.

According to the Romulans the Federation wants to expand... everywhere. :rommie:

Cultural conquest. Everyone should wear spandex, use ships that start with USS, go to Earth and get educated and what else? Oh yes, enjoy Shakespeare and Sinatra...

Assimilation. Just like the Borg... but with fewer cutting beams and cybernetic implants.

Michael Eddington said:
You know, in some ways you're worse than the Borg. At least they tell you about their plans for assimilation. You're more insidious, you assimilate people and they don't even know it.

^ Oh yeah, like Eddington doesn't have a personal grudge that colors his judgment. You know, I wasn't aware the Federation forces worlds to join against their will!

Improbable. The Federation was not founded until after the Earth-Romulan War was over.

Eddington is right... and so is Mr. Laser Beam. The Federation's goal is to unite the galaxy in a peaceful, egalitarian liberal democracy. But its goal is to do this by consent, not by conquest. It wants to spread its values, sure -- but it does so as equals, with the idea of others freely choosing its values rather than having them imposed upon them. It wants allies, partners, and willing members, not vassals, supplicants, and slaves.

The Federation on the surface is expansionistic, adding a new member (on average) every sixteen months, over the course of two centuries.

Maybe they're not that picky after all.

Everyone should ...
Drink Root Beer.

So, after season 4 then.

Sounds about right, except for the event's of Data's Day, whenever Starfleet and Romulan forces came into conflict, the Romulans had their asses handed to them.

:)

I agree with what some others have said already. Peaceful expansion through the addition of new members is their goal.

I also tend to think that there are many worlds within the confines of Federation space that aren't actually members but may be independent worlds that enjoy "affiliated status" due to their geographical location. Such worlds may be free to conduct business with both the Federation and the Romulan Empire if they so wish, with a list of certain items considered contraband in each territory perhaps.
