My LOL moment: the mystery of the ambling cauldron:

My brother uses a big old cauldron to cook deer skulls (hunting trophies) and since it has a rather peculiar smell he keeps it in the backyard near the garage door, lying on its side, propped up halfways so that it can dry out properly.
This morning the cauldron was not where he had left it but it was turned over and stood on the other side of the yard. Dad reported at breakfast that he had heard scraping sounds in the night. When my brother went to tidy his kettle up he found a hedgehog under it.
Apparently the little chap got attracted by the meat smell and stepped into the cauldron upon which the cauldron turned over.

Did the hedgehog survive, or is this actually a funny story about death?

It's only 5:37am and the sun's not up. Not much chance for levity yet.

I'm assuming it simply non-lethally covered the hedgehog, and the scratching sound was the hedgehog trying to figure its way out.

I'd be thrilled to find a hedgehog in my vicinity - they're evidently not native to Northern Michigan.

They're not native to the Outer Hebrides (off the Scottish coast) either, and apparently they're none too welcome there.

I had a run-in with a hedgehog when I was in France with some friends earlier this month. I don't know if we have them in NJ or not, but I had never seen one before.

Basically I got so excited when I saw the hedgehog that I started jumping up and down trying to get it to turn into a ball. But I think that hedgehog was used to humans and just stared at me.

oops, sorry to have been so unspecific. (Happens when you get up at 3 am *sigh*)
The hedgehog remained totally unharmed - though possibly emotionally a bit shaken - but in his attempts to escape he pushed the kettle across the yard (hence the "mystery of the ambling cauldron") which caused the scraping noise.

I love the idea o f hedgies but suspect I don't really want one in my life - they are nocturnal and I loves my sleep! Agree they're so cute!!!
