News Live Action Star Wars Series Coming to Disney's Streaming Service

During the same investment call where he announced Rian Johnson's movie trilogy, Disney CEO Bob Iger also announced that they are going to be doing a live action Star Wars series that will air on their streaming service which is launching in 2019.
I am a big surprised this isn't airing on ABC, but I guess they must be hoping to pull a CBSAA/Star Trek: Discovery and draw in big numbers to the streaming service. If there is one thing that is guaranteed to draw in big it's Star Wars.
The article doesn't mention Underworld at all, so I'm assuming this will probably be a totally unrelated, new show.
 
Last I heard, the Disney streaming service will cost $5 or $6 per month. They want to be cheaper than Netflix. So, between Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and the price, I imagine a lot of people will subscribe to it.

They mentioned that it will "start" substantially lower than Netflix, so you're probably right. But I wouldn't be surprised if Disney raises it within a relatively short period time.
 
I'm starting to really wish they would offer something like a cable package for the streaming services, where for just one fee I can get Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, ect.
 
The new Disney stuff sounds good. As long as they really put content on the service (like, say, all the animated Disney movies, MCU movies after a certain period of time, etc) and don't just spoon feed stuff, its the first streaming service from an individual company that I'm actually really interested in.
 
Oh yeah, Disney has more than enough quality content for a streaming service like this. I think they have said that all of the Marvel and Star Wars (at least Disney era) stuff will be on the service. I'm curious if they're going to put older animated stuff like the Aladdin and The Little Mermaid series, or Gargoyles, Ducktales, Tale Spin, ect on the service.

Those are heading to The Vault...which you can access for a slight additional fee.
 
Hmmm...wonder how long before Disney Star Wars and Marvel fatigue sets in... Kinda already feels like that already and Disney is just getting started. Tons of TFA merchandise still sitting on shelves at my Wal-Mart and toys-r-us stores. They've discounted it so much, and no one's really buying it. It used to feel special and unique Star Wars, now it seems ubiquitous, corporate driven, and cheapened some how.
 
As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Episode I would have never made all that money (the turkey that it was) had it not surfed on the many years the film franchise was dormant.

Disney won't let its mega-franchises breathe.

I felt Rogue One in particular was sort of a letdown in the way it recreated all of the look and feel of ANH. It's not that they didn't get it right...it's just that I'm just so aware that they went about doing it with an unlimited budget. There's just a certain charm in the original trilogy because they had to maximize what they could do with the relatively small budget they had available. You could feel the blood sweat and tears. The new stuff is just so seamless and glitzy that it feels...impersonal.

I mean, if they want to rebuild the Falcon exterior / interior or the Tantive IV over and over again with anal-retentive accuracy, they can do it. But it's not quite the same as the originals.

I really don't see the sign of either franchise slowing down both are still doing incredibly well in theaters and I still see tons of excitment for each release. The Disney Star Wars franchise has barely even started, I really can't see fatigue setting in after just two, soon to be three, movies and one TV series.
The left over toys are probably just because they release a crapload of it, not necessarily because of lack of interest. The stuff we got in for TLJ at the Wal-Mart where I work seemed to be flying of the shelves pretty fast.
Marvel has obviously done a lot more, but everybody still seems to get really excited for the new releases, and they're still bringing in craploads of money.
 
People have brought up Marvel fatigue for years now... I’ve heard people complain about Star Wars fatigue for decades... They’re both still going stronger than ever. The “fatigue” theory is nothing but a load of horse hockey.

It'll just transition. With Cable TV <-- That didn't start out as a 'pay per channel thing/channel package' situation - you got all the regular channels, and then they offered one or two 'movie' channel options (HBO, et. al.)

It was over the next decade that other 'cable only' channels appeared and started charging extra fees, and cable companies started offering 'channel packages - top the point where Cable/Satellite is today.

I'm pretty sure the same thing will start happening with streaming services (IE someone will make a deal with a bunch of these different services and start offering consumer 'package deals' - but time will tell.)

IMO - The more things change, the more they stay the same.
