Little Spelling Bastards

TGTheodore

Yes, I know ... in this age of spellcheckers and so forth, there's no excuse for typos and improper spelling.

Still, I prefer to rely on my own brain (dangerous, I know) and I still have words I don't spell correctly after all these years.

Maintainence/Maintenance

Calvary/Cavalry

Environment/Enviornment

And a few others.

Any other spelling "blocks" that you still have? (Spelling, not improper usage. That's another thread altogether.)

It's quite possible you guys would know better than I. ;) I do notice a few still. And now with auto-spelling correction, it's even more likely our errors will continue to go unnoticed.

I used to have a tendency to spell "opportunity" as "oppurtunity," but I've gotten the hang of it now. It also took me a while to figure out it was "rendezvous" instead of "rendesvous." And I'm still not certain whether it's "harass" or "harrass." I think it's the former. Double letters often give me trouble.

That I know of? 'Necessarily'. Sometimes I spell it with double 'c', sometimes double 's', sometimes both, sometimes neither...

Took me years of concentrated effort to remember how to spell "necessary."

How about "acquaintance"? I always want to leave out that first "n" . . .

My initial instinct for spelling "bureaucratic" is something like "beauraucratic" -- which is so far off that Word's spell-check doesn't even know what I'm up to.

It would take to long to list all the words I get wrong sometimes, but the most consistent would be that I tend to "forget" the first a in character. I know it belongs there, nonetheless I "forget" it 2/3 of the times I type the word and only get it when I reread what I've written.
