Linux question

Plecostomus

Commodore
I have Gutsy installed on my laptop currently, and I need to install a copy of Dapper to run EMC2 (Extended Machine Controller 2) in a separate partition.

However when I run gparted I get a message that my hard-drive (filesystem) is READ ONLY and cannot be edited.

When I set this laptop up I used Ext3 format with the understanding that I could alter the partition later for situations like this.

Now, how do I go about changing the permission of my filesystem so I can alter the partition?

I got absolutely no help from the Ubuntu user forum on this so I'm branching out.

Are you running gparted from your Gutsy installation?

It is possible to do resize the partition on which a running system resides, but you need to use LVM for that (the Logical Volume Manager) which is a bit more tricky to understand, so I don't think Ubuntu uses it in its default install.

It should be possible to resize your existing hard disk partitions from a Ubuntu install cd. If that doesn't work, there's probably something else at work. Try to switch to a console from the Ubuntu installer (I believe it's Alt-F2 or something) and type 'mount' on the prompt. Come back to us with the output of that command.
