Linux peeps: Trouble installing NVIDIA drivers with Ubuntu

Here's my specs:

Windows Vista Business (6.0) &
Ubuntu 8.10 (partition)
Sony Vaio (VGN-SZ430N)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.0Ghz
2046MB RAM
DirectX 10
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 (333MB memory)
Version: 7.15.0010.9735

I’m running a Linux partition (Ubuntu 8.10) on my Sony Vaio, but I’m having great difficulty getting my Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 video card drivers to install. I’ve tried running EnvyNG and using the hardware recognizer (which sees the card but can’t activate it), but I get a number of errors.

Any help?

Needs more info!

Did you try using Ubuntu's built-in tool to enable the binary driver? (If not, why not?!) What was the result? Please note that you'll need to remove Envy and any files it installed before using that method.

Did you try searching the Ubuntu forums for this problem? (It's very, very likely that this question has already been asked and answered there.)

Is /etc/X11/xorg.conf configured properly? Did you check dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Can you post those here?

I DID try this, it refuses to install (it basically just brings up the download item and it stays at 0% before it eventually stops).

Sure! When I get home I'll post them. Thanks!!

Hmm. Well, I would guess that the Hardware Drivers installer, being a bit of GNOME fluff, wouldn't give you any useful error messages, but did Envy by any chance? If so, please post.

Hey, don't thank me yet! I managed to get the Nvidia drivers installed on both Ubuntu Dapper and the current version of Debian that I'm running now, but I am by no means an expert! There's at least a couple people here that have used Ubuntu releases since Dapper--I'm hoping they show up eventually.

What do you mean by this? When you're trying to install, the instalation fails, or it doesn't but you can't activate them?

What nvidia driver version are you trying to install? The 177? What kernel are you using?

Make sure you have the latest kernel properly installed. During my upgrade to 8.10, the kernel failed to install properly for some reason, so the new nvidia restricted drivers did not activated. I then installed the latest kernel, and the drivers now work perfectly.

If you could post the errors that would be helpful. I've had my share of problems installing a Geforce 7300GT on 8.04... Envy almost did the trick. However in my case (don't know if this is helpful or not) when I booted I got a brief apg error then it everything wouldn't load. I commented it out of xorg.conf (turns out a bunch of people had the same problem) and everything worked perfectly with the new nvidia drivers.
