Just got back home... I sensed I was being called...
The OP's probably already left & made his choices, but if not:
I need help with color coordination on an outfit.
I am going to a wedding today, and then having some drinks tonight with a lady friend. I'll be wearing the standard brown slacks, brown shoes, white shirt, and black blazer. What I need to know is will a gold/tan colored tie look good, or should I go with a simple navy colored tie?
Any help would be appreciated here!
Pics of the items would help. But ceteris paribus, unless you get the shade of yellow absolutely, perfectly right, you're safer with the navy, though navy is itself a hard colour to work with black. But the yellow will be even harder to pull off against the harsh contrast of the white shirt/black blazer. Black blazer and brown trousers is also a difficult combo; at least I would find it so.
Better advice would be to use a sky blue shirt instead of the white one, and then a tan/ochre/dull gold tie would likely work well (a dark green tie would also probably work). Alternatively, keep the white shirt, and use a navy blazer and the navy tie you mentioned.
Or use black shoes & grey trousers with the black blazer, white shirt and the navy tie... or even a charcoal grey tie, esp. if you have a cashmere/wool one; or a glen plaid or macclesfield-type silver/grey tie. That would be very "wedding-y", while also being nice for a night out. A little more formal while still being understated.
Just a few thoughts. Have fun with your friend.
