My father in law was a pilot and they used to deadhead all of the time back in the day. Nowadays they try to arrange a return flight to minimize personnel costs/waste.
So what does it mean? They just keep an extra pilot on board in case something goes wrong, like a last minute sickness? Or was Sam there to fly the plane *back* to its origin after Harris deplaned?
