Lex Without Michael and Brainiac without James

Decided to start a separate thread since this is a specific topic on Smallville...I was just wondering what everyone thought about the producers abilities to pull off using characters without their actors portraying them? Lex Luthor being played by someone other than Michael Rossenbaum, if you have seen the trailer for Requiem yet it is up on youtube and Lex has been disfigured and wearing a Hannibal lector like mask and a voice alterator, not to mention he is wearing what appears to be a Kryptonite ring on his right hand! So far I don't mind it...but I would like them to bring Michael back, if only for one more appearence as Lex. Not even sure who is playing this "alternate" Lex ...but it's been interesting to see them pull it off. The same deal by having Allison portray Brainiac without James Marsters. I'll give the producers and writers credit where its due...it's been interesting. What does everyone else think?

How about they say the incident at the fortress aged him, so he's now older, and now can be played by a new actor? As for Braniac, he's a computer. He can take on any form.

I'll wait to see nuLex before chiming in with a opinion.

As for Brainic...I don't really care as he infected Chloe. That was more story based then actor availability. Unless you wanted Chloe to morph into James Marsters?

A good actor with a good story and good dialogue and characterization that makes sense would be worth watching in any show.

If they don't have all, or at least most of the above points, then there's no point.

For me the actors are not irreplacable, but it takes a lot to do a good job. "Lex" in a mask with a voice changer is just a studio prop with a stunt man inside.

No I wouldn't want Chloe to morph into James Marsters...that is a disturbing suggestion and a bad mental image has been bothering me all day now! Thanks for that Broccoli :) My point was basically Allison did an incredible job as the host for Brainiac proving that they didn't need to bring back James which I read was interested in doing more episodes. As for double Lex...yeah...I gathered he was just s some studio flunkie in a mask, my first thought when they pulled back a few months ago was CGI. I wonder if this "offends" Michael or not? He probably doesn't care.

Are you serious?? They showed him wearing a Hannibal-esque mask? Bahaha that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So 'Smallville'.

I really wouldn't mind Michael not returning or James not returning. They're characters on a show - easily recast and replaced. Just say plastic surgery and that'll be it.

They can always bring in a red-headed, bearded Aussie and have him claim to be Lex's illegitimate son, when in fact he's a clone... :shifty:

You peeps are too kind. Replacing a villain actor sucks.

Imagine if they'd replaced Dukat on DS9. Or Q on TNG (more antagonist that villain, I know).

That's why Stargate's Anubis never felt like a great villain. He was faceless robe and then a succession of hosts, etc.

Wait...after Rosenbaum left, they're using Lex again? That's just dumb. It's one thing if the story necessitates replacing the actor like Harry Potter when Richard Harris died, But to go so far as to have the character be disfigured, wearing a Hannibal Lector mask and use a voice alternator since the original actor is no longer in the role? dumb dumb dumb. I don't really regret that I don't watch Smallville anymore now....

^ If this is the final season - as rumored - then it makes sense to bring Lex back (Rosenbaum or no Rosenbaum).

IMO, Smallville should have ended years ago, but that's just me. I stopped watching after the second or midway through the third season. Can't remember which. It just got boring to watch.

Yeah the trailer shows him with a scarred like face and some kind of mask covering half his face and the tubes going into his skull or whatever. On his right hand, he looks to be wearing a kryptonite ring. I kind of thought that suggestion of the shattered fortress scarring him and maybe aging him would be an okay idea as well. My honest opinion is that Smallville as it was originally intended (to be the story of a YOUNG Clark Kent BEFORE he became Superman) should have ended around Clark's graduation from high school. If they wanted to do another sequel show called METROPOLIS which many fans on this board have suggested continuing the stories of Clark Kent while BECOMING Superman but without him actually becoming Superman yet then they could have done so. I would have been fine with that.

I don't have problem with it as long as it's not a regular thing with Lex and he has the problems he has now. But it shouldn't happen often.

As for brainiac that doen't bother me one bit and they can do that as often as they like. They already showed a while back he can infect people an inhabit their bodies.
