Let's celebrate Harry Kim

Lynx

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Born 5 March 2349 (Stardate 26172.65)

Comment: In the book "The Black Shore", Harry Kim mention that it is his birthday. Memory Beta gives the Stardate of the day to 50175 which is Monday 5 March 2373.

So let us raise our glasses for our favorite Operations Officer:beer:

I have no strong feelings about Harry one way or the other. He was ok, didn't stand out much to me.

Though Garrett Wang is one of my favorite convention guests. He is so much fun

He's a nice guy who gets a few episodes in the sun so to speak. The one were he is in the clink with Paris comes to mind.

Kim helped out a lot but he did destroy the ship, and froze everybody on it. I think that was one of the reason why the ensign always had a supervisor.

I was surprised Janeway trusted him being on the bridge.

Oh Harry. He was rude to The Doctor, Tuvok and Neelix.. but it wouldn't have been the same without him.

Many Happy Returns!

I don't think he was ever rude to anyone. He made a bold comment to Tuvok on Demon but it wasn't rude

Don't want to rain on Harry's birthday thread. Tuvok was a much higher rank and the little permanent Ensign that he was took more than one opportunity to put Tuvok in his place. Er Harry, his place was above yours. Must have really stung when Marayna preferred Tuvok in all his uptight glory over young Harry. I did like the way they bonded at the end of that episode though and their games of Kal-toh. That loosened them both up with each other.

Just Harry seemed to be a bit ambitious or above his station. The way he would say 'The Doctor' like he was about to roll his eyes. Sure he was dismissive series one when The Doctor was shrinking. They all were and were all too busy to care.. including lowly Harry. However hologram or not a Doctor has position. Fast forward to series Seven and Harry still felt The Doctor was second rate to him. I mean The Doctor had been in command of Voyager keeping it safe, but Harry so wanted to just dismiss the hologram into the background. A real man is here now Doc, move over!

Honestly if Harry was all that then why didn't he get a promotion?

I kind of felt Tom did though. Sure he had to lose rank to regain it but he did that. In fairness to Harry he got do nightshift command.

Janeway did recognize and promote position if not rank. She promoted Neelix as an Ambassador. Not official I know, but still a recognition. The Doctor was given the ability to be Emergency Command. Seven.. all perfect Seven, she did everything!

Maybe Tuvok's promotion was a "time in service" thing that was long overdue. Or his position required a promotion. The guy was like 100 years old.

I bet at Tuvok's promotion ceremony, While Janeway pinned his collar, Chakotay read off the promotion:

Tuvok...er...of Vulcan, is being advanced in rank, by order of the Commander in Chief, of the Star Fleet, from Lieutenant Commander, to Commander. Effective date of Pay "3 March, 2369. Let's all give it up for Lieutenant Commander Tuvok!"
*applause
Tuvok: "As Mr. Paris would say.....Better late than never."

As for Paris, I think Janeway reinstated his last held rank in "Caretaker," then in "30 days," he was demoted, and later on his rank was reinstated again. A real troublemaker, that Lt. Marseilles.

In the episode where Harry tries to be in charge Janeway says there simply weren't positions opened up. In other words he was locked where he was unless his immediate superiors died or were incapacitated.

In the alternate timeline in Endgame he is Captain of the USS Rhode Island so perhaps in the 23 year timeline he moved up in rank at some point or another or perhaps in the ensuing decade rose even more.

I'm sure that once they got back to the AQ Harry (and others) got promoted. And I'm sure that after that he did whatever he could to climb the ranks until he became a Captain

He may have even gotten a nice cushy job designing starships:biggrin:

I bet a lot of the VOY crew were in high demand after they got back...

Tom probably got a job as a test pilot.....

Chakotay probably got to teach at the academy or something....

I've always wondered about the former Maquis. Do they keep their ranks?

IMO
Chakotay definitely gets his SF commission back, maybe even promoted.

Paris for sure, even if he doesn't want to stay in SF.

B'elanna...I'm not sure. She was at the academy for 1.5 years and dropped out. She'd probably want to continue in SF and her father in law is a full Admiral. Janeway probably got promoted. I think she could have it if she wanted it.

I have no doubt all of the Maquis were exonerated even before the war on DS9 ended. I'm sure many would want to go home, if they still have a home. But on the other hand, many may have just gotten so used life on Voyager, that they'd want to stay, even as non officers
