Length, Width & Depth Of Kitbashed (ex-Fed) Freighter

6of9

Ensign
The author of "Star Trek: Screaming Rebel" (Doug Kulp) of Trek Writers' Guild wants me to help him with a kitbashed civilian/decommissioned ex-Starfleet (TMP-era) freighter. I found one that would be perfect (Wanderer-Class), but I'd like to have a reasonable guess-timate of the ship's width, length & depth.

He's already got part one of "Screaming Rebel" written but we're working on stardates/contemporary calendar dates, etc. for additional chapters. I'd like to give Doug a set of details such as realistic number of decks, etc.

Would anyone be able to help me out with some best guess-timates?

Well, the saucer superstructure from the disc rim up to the top of the bridge seems a simple repeat of the TMP Enterprise structure, and is in perfect scale with the warp engine that's also a TMP repeat. So we can safely assume that both these components are identical to their TMP counterparts (and not, for some weird reason, 80% or 127% scale models).

It's then just a matter of deciding how big the TMP Enterprise was. If we go by the generally assumed overall length of 305 m, we get engine nacelle length of about 155 meters. Thus this freighter is

305 m long
124 m wide
75 m high

and looks like she'd have the same number of habitable decks as the Enterprise saucer does. Estimates on that vary a bit, but Probert originally designed her for eleven decks; this baby might be missing the lowermost "deck" (or, rather, just a sensor dome), so I'd say ten decks in the saucer. Do the cargo holds have habitable decks in them? Hard to tell.

Of course, a 305 m Enterprise has always been a bit problematic. The saucer rim wouldn't be two full decks high, then, but only two reduced-height decks, with large areas of the lower deck missing because of the concavity of the saucer. There'd be no way to fit the multi-deck recreation room in there at the aft rim on a ship that small. So you might give the dimensions a 10% or 15% raise if needed. But the above dimensions would hold for the "historical concensus view" or whatever.

The Bohuss is actually my design, so I can field this one pretty easily. The saucer is NOT the full TMP saucer, but one ring in.. the nacelles are TMP nacelles, though, and a safe measuring point for you.

As for the infamous 'rec deck' scene, we know that Probert objected about that particular set, but that Roddenberry overrode him. Just chalk that one up, as usual, to Hollywood screwing up again. :)
