Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Rim

From Deadline Hollywood:

In a last dash pre-holiday deal, Legendary Picture has closed a high-six figure preemptive acquisition of Pacific Rim, a science fiction film that will be written by Travis Beacham. Beacham was the original writer of Clash of the Titans, the 3D remake which has grossed $475 million worldwide for Legendary and Warner Bros.

Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. The deal was made on the basis of a detailed 25-page treatment. Legendary acquired the project under its co-production and co-financing agreement with Warner Bros. The deal was made by the writer’s reps at WME and Anonymous Content.

The picture is envisioned as a tent pole event film, and Thomas Tull's Legendary is stockpiling those. Legendary co-financed the upcoming Christopher Nolan-directed Inception, and teams with Warner Bros on Nolan's Batman films and the Superman reboot that Nolan is godfathering. Legendary also made recent deals for the EA game Mass Effect as well as a Godzilla reboot, and has Sam Raimi developing to direct a live action film based on the vidgame World of Warcraft.

Beacham is also working on a large canvas as well. He's writing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for Fox and Scott Free, with Timur Bekmambetov attached to direct; and The Black Hole, the remake of the 1979 film that is on a fast track at Disney with Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. Beacham also completed a script for Bad Robot's JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk to produce. Details are being kept under wraps, but it's based on an Abrams idea and it is on track to begin production later this year.

sounds like fun!

I wonder if this will have any relation to the Godzilla film they are working on.

Uhm yeah.. the guy who wrote Clash of the Titans.. that is supposed to be good reference? :shifty::shifty:

At least we got a good evening out of it mocking the movie over a couple of beers.

He was the original writer of the Clash of the Titans remake. Others later rewrote it, so how much of what ended up on the screen was his work can't be gauged unless you get hold of one of his drafts.

Pacific Rim casting

now it sounds like Idris Elba will really get in on some action soon. The Wrap reports Elba is apparently the frontrunner for Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi flick Pacific Rim. No official deal is in place yet, but it sounds like Legendary Pictures is keen on having him alongside rising star Charlie Hunnam in a story set in a future in which an alien attack threatens the existence of earth and humans must battle the nasty and brutal creatures by piloting giant robots. Yep, it sounds quite awesome.

Sounds like the title of a porn movie!

Sounds like Destroy All Monsters or similar (actually it sounds sort of like Neon Genesis Evangelion, but I don't think that's a direction they'd go in:wtf:). It'll be interesting to see if they can design some American kaiju that have the same cachet as Godzilla and Mothra and company, or at least aren't embarrassing.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

Idris Elba is a good sign.

Lets see how this is going to turn out.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

Idris Elba and Del Toro? If you excuse me, I will now mentally picture the highly improbable meeting of Stringer Bell and Pan's Labyrinth's Pale Man. I am pretty sure Stringer Bell would try to cut a deal with the eyeless ogre.

I like World of Warcraft and Mass Effect, and I think either (in theory) have material for pretty good film. The first American Godzilla was pretty terrible, but I do remember that the original Japanese film was made in response to the flood of 1950s American monster movies, it's certainly possible to do a film about a giant lizard threatening to destroy everything and make it entertaining enough.

World of Warcraft's biggest problem is that in making Avatar Cameron may have already made the best Warcraft film; it's a fantastical world of floating rocks, nature-attuned natives, and a guy who impresses everyone else by seizing a really hard to obtain epic mount.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

The official plot synopsis has been released, and the film will be out on July 13, 2013.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

As an anime and Godzilla fan, I can't even begin to describe how excited this makes me. Although I'm surprised they didn't mention Idris Elba anywhere there. While Rinko Kikuchi did an awesome job in Babel and Charlie Hunnam is pretty good in Sons of Anarchy I don't think their names would draw as much attention of Elba's would.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

Kaiju? Interesting, so a Godzilla movie, basically? Interesting to see how they approach this one and whether it gets accepted.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

Yeah. I'm kinda surprised to actually see them using that terminology in an American movie. It'll definitely be interesting to see what kind of reaction it gets. I'm a big Del Toro fan, so I don't doubt it will be good, so that leaves the question of whether Americans will go see a movie about people piloting giant robots fighting giant monsters.

Re: Legendary Pictures developing sci-fi blockbuster titled Pacific Ri

So with two pilots there'll be no Jaeger Meister?

First look at Idris Elba in character!

I like the suit design, it has just the right amount of anime influence to it.
