Don't know if this has been posted or not, but as the title says, Legendary Pictures is developing movies and shows based on the comic book Black Hammer. Black Hammer, for those who don't know, is the story of a group of people living on a farm in a small town. Turns out they're all superheros and they have no idea how they got here, only that they can't leave. And they've been here for ten years or so. It's a great book, a great character piece that both embraces superheros and all the wild and crazy shit that goes with them, but also deconstructs them. There's a somber, bittersweet tone to the Twilight Zone like setting.

In addition to the Black Hammer title, they've expanded it's universe with three mini-series focused on characters not trapped on the farm. The first features a Lex Luthor like mad scientist, the second an homage to James Robinson's Starman, the third a group that's basically the Legion Of Super Heroes during the "5 years later" era. Pretty much every character is analogue, mostly of DC or Marvel characters.

Looks like the Legendary Pictures deal covers the entirety of the Black Hammer universe, not just the main book. The art has an indie comic look to it, so it'll be weird to see these characters look "real".

At any rate, any fans of Black Hammer out there? And how do you feel about this news?

I've never heard of it before, but you've definitely put it on my radar. Sounds very interesting.

I collected comics for 30 years, exactly, and aside from an occasional trade, back issue or mini, I haven't been a regular collector for about a decade. I still check the comic sites daily and this one piqued my interest from the get go. So it, and it's assorted mini's are the only comics I actually collect now. You're pretty much getting an entire superhero universe in a few books, with only one book not being a mini or one shot. Much easier on the wallet! ) I didn't realize it, but they released a one shot this month featuring C'thu-Louise, daughter of former villain C'thu-Lou. It's a mash up of teen alienation, bullying, Lovecraftian horror, with
    a surprisingly sweet ending

Looks like the next mini will be called Black Hammer '45, set during WW2 featuring Black Hammer Squadron. Most likely a group like the Black Hawks.

The various title in the Hammerverse are

    Ongoing

Black Hammer (collected in two trades)
Black Hammer: Age Of Doom (the second volume)

    Mini-series
Sherlock Frankenstein And The Legion Of Evil
Doctor Star And The Kingdom Of Lost Tomorrows
    The Quantum Age
    Black Hammer: C'thu-Louise (one shot)

Jeff Lemire is local to me (if you read his "Essex County", that's set in right here), so his stuff is always on our radar.

Fantastic series, I love the modern spin on the silver age heroes that are familiar but fleshed out better than their counterparts were at the time. And the spin off minis are just as good as the main, a rarity I find.

I've heard of Black Hammer, but never read it. It definitely sounds like it could be interesting.
Where did you hear about the movie/TV show? I just checked Entertainment Weekly, IGN, Io9, and Comic Book Resources, and none of them have anything about it.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I like a lot of Lemire's work. Also, I had followed The Walking Dead and Invincible throughout those runs, now I am looking for something to fill in that Invincible gap. I like the style of the art as well.

    Definitely agree there!

To clarify the titles I listed above...under "ongoing" I put two Black Hammer titles. There's only one. Black Hammer transitioned into Black Hammer: Age Of Doom. It's the regular title, but the name was expanded and it got a new number one. Which was also, per the authors, a meta commentary on how many comic series today tend to do this.

The stories you linked to are from last month, that must be why I didn't see anything on my regular sites when I looked yesterday.

For anyone interested, Comixology has a sale this weekend--99 cents an issue and 5 bucks for collections.
