Legend of the Seeker-Amazing final episode

broberfett

Vice Admiral

This is a big spoiler, so don't read ahead if you don't want to know the ending.********************************

I was just about to post a thread about how the show can't really go anywhere. They can never kill Darken Ral or the show ends. It is like Voyager where they can't ever get home without the series ending or The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon that ended before they could get home. When there is only one bad guy, you can't ever defeat the badguy. So I was fucking amazed when they went ahead and did it! Hell yeah! They wasted that Mother Fucker! It was so refreshing. Hopefully they will continue the show with a new badguy and no resurrection. I would have burnt the body to ashes after dismembering it into little tiny pieces, then I would have spread the ashes out and dispersed them, probably in a couple rivers.

I thought the character died at the end of the first book, so he was going to have to buy it sooner rather than later.

For me, I have the benefit of not having read any of the books, so this was actually a nailbiter for me. I didn't have the faintest idea how this was going to end and it kept me entertained all the way to its conclusion.

My God, they actually had a villain who made Rahl look like a pussycat...

I'm really glad to read this. I was concerned they were going to pussy out and keep him as the villain for Season 2. I'm way behind, but I'm more inclined to keep watching now I've read this.

There are a few things that I disliked about Darken's death.

One I missed any real chance to see him and Richard in a serious conflict (once was it).

And they robbed themselves of the conflict of seeing Richard having to to deal with who is father is, having that occur after the death robs it of a lot of drama.

I was just so happy that he died instead of the endless dragging on. I see your point that there was no direct challenge and conflict with Ral. Ral just dies trying to stop the Seeker from winning.

The episode was just too rushed. They tried to cram too much into a 42 minute episode and the result isn't very impressive. This needed to be a two part episode.

Actually I don't think they will go that route here.
Last week, Rahl told Jenssen (Richard's half-sister) that he was her and Richard's half-brother. That could've been a lie (he certainly lied about having the same father as the two of them, since Jenssen and Richard have the same mother but different fathers), but it's unlikely he would've made that claim if he were really Richard's father. Given that Craig Parker is only 13 years older than Craig Horner, I can understand why they ditched the father idea. And since they didn't follow through on the claim of brotherhood, it was probably just a lie.

I agree. And that "hiding in the magic painting" episode a couple of weeks ago was a waste of time. They should've skipped that one and done this one as a 2-parter.

I liked the magic painting episode, but I agree that the finale really should have been a two-parter. It just moved way too fast.

I know the series doesn't follow the books religiously, but Darken Rahl isn't really a major character beyond the first 2-3 books. Besides, the Seeker has much, much bigger fish to fry.

Yea, much like the episode where Denna tortured Richard A LOT was crammed into this thing. I'm not sure I like Darken Rahl's television demise more then his book demise. In the book it was actually better handled I'd say. The tv show it was kinda "oh he runs in, he stabs the boxes of Ordin. Oh noes he blewz himself up! DEAD!" It all happened pretty fast.

As for Richard's parentage and what not well at the end of the first book Richard still had no idea who his biological Father was.

He still has no idea at the end of the first season of tv show, so it kinda matches up there.

Now will Darken Rahl be his Father, or was the story Darken Rahl told Jenssen somewhat true. I think they all could be siblings. Panis Rahl having Darken first with a different woman and then at some point he raids the village and impregnates Zedd's daughter and thus you get Richard. Then later he gets her back and thus you get Jenssen.

The way the very ending of s1 had them talking about how the "Rahl bond" was now broken makes me think Richard is still going to be a Rahl and if they introduce Jagang it and his dream walking then the Rahl bond is going to be critical.

Anyone heard any spoilers about S2?

good episode on its own, but keeps up their theme of completely mangling the books. They've chewed through all kinds of major plot points from the series, wasted plots from future books, and just changed things that didn't make sense.

Ending was pretty disappointing, compared to the book. None of the trickery, no actual confrontation, accidental death, and they skipped the whole bit about Richard figuring out how to be with Kahlan. Now skip Richard as Rahl, with associated power over the Mord Sith, etc, and it's really just more generic fantasy series, and less Sword of Truth...

On one hand, father or brother, wouldn't Richard be next in line for the throne either way? On the other, wasn't Darken already the Lord Rahl by the time Richard and Jenssen were born? It would have been a lot harder sell last week if he told Jenssen that he was the monster that took their mother.

I liked the finale. I've long since gotten over the series deviating from the book(s). They have to do what works better for television. I do hope that they make the following seasons at least roughly follow each book. On the other hand, much like with the new Star Trek movie, we don't know what's going to happen to the characters. I'll also second making Jagang the new bad guy -- he can remain a threat for the rest of the series that way.

I'm definitely looking forward to next season! I'm glad the show has been deemed a success - it seems syndication has become an almost non-existent option since DS9 ended... I was quite afraid it would fail financially.

not sure how much they CAN follow the books now, though. They've already burned so many plot points that ended up being major themes in later books. Rahl as his father (and also his evil half brother) doesn't work as well if Darken Rahl is his brother, as it makes the new brother "just another evil half brother".

The plague storyline was taken from the same book and used for an episode here.

Sisters of Light, major players in the series, have already been pretty much burned up in a one-off reference. They're no longer from the Old World, no experience with Jajang, and seem pretty unlikely to be kidnapping Richard in the near future. The Sisters of Dark also were supposed to come out of that.

We've already played the "multiple copies of the Book of Counted Shadows" game. Suppose it doesn't really matter, though, as the whole point was to get the Boxes of Orden (again), and they appear to have been destroyed by Darken Rahl's bad luck.

Which also took away a couple other big points: Richard hasn't figured out how to be with Kahlan yet. Looked like they were going to include that as part of the finale, but they just dropped it out again, staying with the status quo. Suppose this way, they can keep them together rather than constantly kidnapping Richard or Kahlan to prevent them from being together.

Richard also never defeated Rahl, or really did much of anything to help his growth as a character (and leader). Instead of seeking the truth of the matter, and tricking Rahl, Rahl just died by accident. Fun. Actually, when you look at the entire final sequence, you really can't say that this season was much based upon Wizard's First Rule at all. The First Rule never even played into the defeat, instead of being THE reason for the defeat.

Again, it's an entertaining Fantasy series, and I like watching it, but they've really butchered it to the point where it's fairly dishonest to call it part of the Sword of Truth series. A few tidbits are tossed out here and there, names and locations, but most of the key components have been changed or tossed out entirely. With such a HUGE series to play with, and books with 10s of thousands of pages to draw from, it's a shame.

^Look at it this way... it's probably more faithful to the Sword of Truth books than Hercules and Xena were to Greek mythology. :D

Im totally amazed at some of the CGI work on this series. Especially the finale.

Some higher budget shows like Lost have some cheesy looking CGI effects (i.e. Polar Bear, Submarine).
