Law & Order: UK series 3

Heads up for those who want to know, according to Digital Spy the 3rd series of Law & Order: UK will begin airing on ITV1 and HD on the 9th of September at 9pm.

Out of curiosity, what was released on dvd? Is that the first two seasons in one box set, or just season one?

^It was produced as 1 series, then ITV decided to air it and release it on dvd as 2 series so to us it's series 3, but they released it in the US as 1 season on DVD.

So Law & Order UK series 3 starts tonight. Just thought I'd bump the thread for any one interested who may have forgotten.

Thanks, I'll have to ITV Player that at the weekend. Interested to see how good they can keep this show. Overall, I've been msotly impressed so far (despite the constant story stealing, are they still doing that?)
One thing that could come from domestically written stories is we could have British police instead of American detectives with British accents

^I think they have to, contractual obligation, or something. They said they hope to do some original stories but they don't know when they'll be able to. But that was after the first series.

To be honest, I'm not enough of a Law & Order buff to care if the stories are re-used. I won't even notice most of the time. But I can't see it would be too much trouble to alter the approach of the characters to solving the story to be more realistically British. If Bamber was doing his Apollo accent, he could be a NYPD Detective without any other change in plot. The CPS side has more of a domestic feel, but the two police leads aren't very CID at all.

Well apparently there's a few times they've had to drop stories because they must couldn't make them work with our policing or legal framework, so they do make some effort but yeah.

The new season starts here in Canada Sept. 23. I'm looking forward to it. I really enjoyed Season 1 (ie: series 1 & 2 in the UK).

Still haven't got round to watching any of series 3, but ITV have just announced they've picked it up for another 13 episodes, which I think will probably count as series 5 and 6 over here.

Excellent news.

I've been enjoying the new series as much as the previous two. Easily the best Law & Order incarnation on air right now.

So every episode just changes some New York specific dialog to Anglo? I'm watching the housewives prostitutes who killed the ex cop now and it is the same story

More or less, but more complicated than that. They have to change the judicial procedures and such. There's been at least 2 episodes they started to adapt but could't make fit with our judicial system.

We're only a few episodes into Season One here in the US (ignoring the DVD release). I find it somewhat amusing watching an ITV show on BBC America.

I've never been much of a fan of L&O, but what I've seen of the UK iteration has been pretty interesting. I think it's because I'm not very familiar with the British legal system, so it's actually something new for me.

So the episodes where the L&O twist is when a New York Supreme Court judge excludes key evidence because of peculiar American or New York law are sometimes not adaptable?

Yeah, something like that. Basically there's somethings that don't work in the British system the same way they do in the US and couldn't possibly work. Like there's no plea bargaining in the UK in the same way there is in the US.

Which is a major source of drama in the L&O series as a franchise. I have seen times when some of that has slipped into the UK version, particularly early on. The CPS characters visiting suspects like the attorneys do in the US shows, for example. Here the first direct contact between the CPS and the suspect will be on the day of the first hearing. Outside the court, such contact would be considered unprofessional and any communication would normally only be via the defendant's solicitor writing to the CPS.

The biggest departure from an accurate British legal system is the retention of the police characters 'interrogating' suspects including getting angry, sarcastic, implying deals, the works. I guess a PACE compliant taped interview isn't very dramatic and it does help move the story on faster than would be realistic. ;)

I've been catching up watched 3 or 4 episodes the other day and noticed that creep in too, seemed wrong to me watching but I've never actually had to deal with any of that so I wasn't completely sure. So I guess they do try to clean them up but don't always manage it.

Right from the beginning I've thought that was a weakness of the 'adapting US stories' approach to L&O:UK. There is a surprising amount of difference between our law enforcement and criminal justice systems and you are really watching two American detectives solve crimes in London  I enjoy the show, so I don't particularly fall out with that - god knows UK based cop dramas get enough wrong all by themselves. But L&O is a particularly American franchise to try and adapt. Just something as simple as the same two detectives always working together as 'partners' is not British. Also the 'detectives outrank uniformed' thing has carried over. And I still smile at the bomb-squad PCSO in episode 1 :D
