Law & Order - Obama reference

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
The final scene of tonight's episode features a press conference given by Jack McCoy. The last thing we hear is a reporter saying "Is it true you've been asked to join the Obama administration?"

Makes you wonder how they knew... ;) (since obviously this episode would have been filmed weeks, if not months, ago)

They probably shot it both ways. Of course, since Hollywood is a one-party system, maybe not.

Dick Wolf (L&O producer) can hardly be accused of liberal sympathies, though, can he? I surely never heard anyone call him that. I've been a L&O fan for awhile now and have not noticed any particular political slant, left *or* right.

I figure it couldn't have ever been that liberal, though; they had Fred Thompson on the show for what, four years? Basically playing himself. ;)

An upcoming episode of Boston Legal will involve a woman who was fired for voting for McCain and they announced it last week.

^ That's not necessarily foreshadowy unless they specifically state who won.

I imagine that during the ADR process, separate sets of dialogue were recorded (referring to both McCain and Obama), pending the outcome of the election.

No doubt. Despite differing in length by one syllable, both names take roughly the same amount of time to say, so it's easy to substitute the audio track.

Oh, it's definitely got a liberal slant.

Really? How do you figure?

Except for isolated incidents (such as "Gunshow", where McCoy goes after the manufacturer of a gun because it can easily be converted from a semi to a full auto), I never noticed any particular political slant.

Any liberal bias McCoy and Cutter might have, seems to be complemented by an equal amount of rightward drift (Such as McCoy's charging the extreme fighters with terrorism, which even I thought was bullshit).

Anyone else in Canada see this episode? Since it was broadcast on Tuesday, it would have been shown before Obama won - I wonder what they used?

I would have seen it, but my wife claimed the TV for 90210 :)

Don't forget Abby Carmichael (Angie Harmon) and I believe the late Alexandra Borgia and then you can top that with Arthur Branch.

I'm not sure McCoy's has had a rightward drift - he's also been very pragmatic about cases and gone on with them, political consequences been damned.

There was also an ep where Briscoe makes a quip about looking for some-one with a Tom Delay tv shirt.

I've read that the show does have one major bias though - Dick Wolfe has a pretty low opinion of defence lawyers.

Not surprising. With few exceptions, shows about defense attorneys tend to suck, unless they're in the Practice/Boston Legal or L.A. Law universes.

But the difference is, L&O is also a show about the police. If you're going to put lawyers and cops in the same show, it makes sense that the lawyers would be prosecutors, since they and the police are both working to, well, prosecute.

Also, defense attorneys are usually sneaky by nature. They have to be. That's how they raise reasonable doubt.

Talk about low opinion, though: Anyone who's seen SVU lately will realize that Michaela McManus has a fairly low opinion too, of...well, acting ability, for one. Range of emotion, for another. Not being an annoying piece of shit, thrice.

They probably shot it both ways.

That’s a distinct possibility. Dick Wolf has in the past created alternate endings for an episode., it was with a Criminal Intent episode. Though with that episode one version was shown on the east coast while the other was shown on the west coast.

It'd be amusing if they made a bunch of unlikely ones and just made a montage for the DVD.

"Are you considering a position in the McCain Administration?"
"Barr Administration?"
"Nader?"
"Paul?"
"Clinton?"
"Lincoln?"
"Skywalker?"

unfortunately the version I saw, and preferred - the one where that uber bitch Nicole Wallace is shot dead on screen - was not the one chosen for canon.
