Latest Star Trek Magazine, 13

Let's see: in issue 14, we've got a Romulan history that incorporates the Vulcan's Noun books as well as the post-Nemesis fiction;

Editor, STM

Cool. Any chance of seeing an interview/article with/about Diane Duane about her rihannsu interpretation of the rommies?

No, unfortunately that issue was already planned before I was in touch with Diane - but a Romulan theme will turn up again I'm sure in the not-that-distant future!

Cool. I've been getting the magazing for a few months now, and one of the biggest suprises for me was the fact that you guys actully do so much book stuff. I'm really glad to see that you do too, because it's always seemed like the majority of the official stuff pretty much ignored the book, but you actually treat them like they are equal to the movies and TV shows, which is nice to see.

Not equal - but as I've said elsewhere, the current situation is that, bar J.J.'s movie in 8 months time, the books and the comics are just about the only official new Star Trek stories. We did a UK supplement a few months back that was solely the books, but I doubt we'd repeat it

Paul
Ok, not equal, but you still treat them better than alot of the stuff.

I'm intrigued by that - do you mean we treat other bits of Trek less well than the books? Or do you mean that we treat them better than other outlets do?

I meant you guys treat the book better than alot of the other outlets. I haven't been reading the books real long, but you guys seem to be one of the few official Trek products to really do a lot of stuff for the books. I never paid that attention to the books before, but I don't really remember the few issues of the Communicator or Star Trek: The Magazine that I read doing anything about the books. And none of the stuff I've watched on TV has even aknowledged that the books exist, other than maybe a brief mention when talking about how many products there have been over the years.

You guys and the fansites are pretty much the only places other than here that have any kind of news or anything for the books.

"Starlog" magazine often highlighted upcoming ST novels, especially in the the 80s, including excerpts from "Chekov's Enterprise (Walter koenig's hilarious TMP diary), "The Galactic Whirlpool", the controversy over the death of Kirk in "The Entropy Effect", interviews with people like AC Crispin and Howard Weinstein, and cover artists Boris Vallejo and Keith Birdsong.

I also recall one of their book retrospectives featured the missing part of the internal cover art of "Enterprise: The First Adventure" (the first edition featured Kirk, Spock and McCoy, but the original artwork also had Scott, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov).

The various DVD boxed sets have included some bonus features about the books, too.

(T)he missing part of the internal cover art of "Enterprise: The First Adventure" (the first edition featured Kirk, Spock and McCoy, but the original artwork also had Scott, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov).

The Science Fiction Book Club hardcover of "Enterprise: the First Adventure" featured the complete Boris Vallejo painting as a wraparound dust jacket. It's also, AFAIK, the only HC edition of the book.

The images of "the gang of four" on the wraparound cover are interesting; Scott and Uhura are in red uniforms, but it looks like they were originally painted in tan uniforms but later painted over. Plus, Uhura is in the wrong uniform; it has a series version collar, rather than the "pilot" collars the rest of the characters are wearing. It seems likely the art wasn't used on the Pocket edition because of these irregularities.

^ It was at least used on the solicitation cover flats (I still have one). I suppose the call not to include the complete picture on the actual book could have been budget-driven.

That would explain why the portion of the stepback art that was used is missing from recent reprints (such as my copy of the book)...

I finally found the issue at the grocery store, but with money tight I wasn't able to get it. Was it always $9.99? Because I don't remember it being so expensive before.

100 page specials are $9.99; standard size are cheaper. The next big issue will be February next year...

Ok, I thought so. I'm hoping to get a job sometime in the next week or so, and as soon as I get my first paycheck I was gonna get caught up on my Trek stuff, because I also still need Kobayashi Maru, and Echoes and Refractions.

It wasn't the only reason, for me to stop buying Star Trek Monthly (as it was back in the days before transatlantic publishing) but when the price hit £5 per issue and that there were only six issues a year, I stopped buying it and just flicked through it when WH Smith, I was also a student so my priorities were kinda different.
