Late night movie hosts

Inspired by my newest avatar, I thought I'd ask you all to discribe your local late night movie hosts. Either current, or ones you remember from your youth.

My avatar is of the Ghoul. He was on Channel 61 in Cleveland Ohio in the 70's when I was a teen-ager. His act involved general crazyness, blowing up models with fireworks, and generaly abusing "Froggy" his rubber toy side kick. Also during the movies, all horrible B horror films, he would drop in funny sound effects and lines from comedy albums. For instance, if someone would open a crypt and bats would fly out, you'd hear Bill Cosby yelling "WHAT WAS THAT?!!! A MOSQUITA?!! When I was 13 I thought he was hilarious. He wore sunglasses with one lens missing, a fright wig, and a lab coat covered with buttons. Like, Beatle buttons, or buttons that say Vote for Wikey, and stuff like that.

I was recently feeling nostalgic and desided to do a websearch on The Ghoul. and found out he's still around, doing his Ghoul thing at another station. He even has a website to buy Ghoul stuff from. I got myself and my son matching Ghoul t-shirts. He loves when we wear them together and we can be "twins".

There was one other regular late night movie show, "Holihan and Big Chuck" that ran for 30 years, but I'll save them for later.

So let's hear about your favorite late night movie hosts.

I'm a Joe Bob Briggs fan. He hosted a couple of films back to back on Saturday nights on TNT in the late 1990s. He often hosted films that were up my alley, usually B-Movie Horror films and he'd be pretty rough on them, saying what you were thinking about how corny they were or tell you what had been edited out by the network.

Dang! Where did you find a Ghoul avatar? I was just thinking it would be cool to search You Tube and see if some of his stuff in on there.

The original in Cleveland was Ghoulardi, who went on to be the voiceover announcer of ABC. Remember, this is the guy who died about 10 years ago. Him and Tim Conway were partners at one time. The Ghoul (Ron Sweed) came later; same fright wig and glasses. He was on channels 50, 20, and 62 in Detroit.

Damn, I remember some of those skits with Froggy. Not to mention "Ghoulumbo", and my personal favorite "Ultra Ghoul vs. the Lake Erie Monster". His overdubs of campy horror flicks were hysterical. Remember Psychomania???

Ah, brings back memories.

Not late night, but Saturday afternoons: WTOG, Channel 44 in Tampa. "Dr. Paul Bearer" would host "Creature Features," showcasing old B-movie horror/SF flicks.

The closest I ever got to actually see was Commander USA's Groovy Movies back in the beginnings of the USA network.

I have appreciated some of the post-classic people like Joe Bob Briggs but it's a different sensibility. I always resented USA's Up All Night crew because they replaced the legendary Night Flight.

Does anyone remember Terry Farrell hosting the Sci-Fi Channel series Exposure for short films? She was always wearing these crazy outfits and I swear I'm the only one who remembers it.

^ You're not the only one. I saw "Tripping the Rift" there before I saw it on the internet (the 'net version was better :D)

That's funny! I'm too young to know who the Ghoul was, but at the most recent comicon by Detroit last May, there he was. I went with a lot of people from work (and my boss, the biggest geek I know), and I've never seen him so excited to meet him. We all got our pictures taken with him, and my boss got some wobbly toy things signed by him, and I gotta admit, that guy was a riot. VERY fun. (He was in costume, too).

So count me in as a new fan!! :techman:

Joe Bob Briggs started out on The Movie Channel on cable. It was the only pay movie channel offered in a small town I lived in. It was better than TNT's version in some ways because he was uncensored and so were the movies. On the other hand he only appeared inbetween movies.

I did like on TNT how he pointed out in THE FOG about the guy letting the woman drive the pick-up.

I'm working on a Ghoulardi documentary right now which will air on PBS in Cleveland probably later this year. :)
