Last US Combat Soldiers Leaves Iraq

I wish that the Australian soldiers could leave to since nearly every couple of monthes our soldires are getting killed over there

You're thinking of Afghanistan, where 18 Australian soldiers have been killed (19 if you count one serving in the British Army). These were the first Australian combat deaths since Vietnam.

All Australian combat troops withdrew from Iraq in July of 2009 (200 support personnel remain there, however) after having ceased combat operations over one year before that. None were killed in combat either during the invasion or the subsequent occupation. A few were killed in accidents and some who were employed by private security firms died, however.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad these troops are finally leaving. However, I do find it odd that everyone seems to be forgetting about the 50,000 troops who are still remaining in Iraq.

Simply because they are not going to engage in "combat operations" doesn't mean the U.S. involvement in the war is over. As far as I'm concerned, it won't be over until every U.S. troop is back home.

This sums up my feelings on the matter....

Radio this morning: Sound of a soldier whooing as his plane/helicopter takes off that "it's over we freed Iraq!"

Yep, we sure did. We freed them from any form of stable government whatsoever. Go us!

That same soldier? He'll be protesting the building of a mosque in New York City by the middle of next week.

I'm not forgetting but it's a start.

That pic isn't really fair, IMO. No one has said the mission is over, and comparison to Bush's mission accomplished moment is stretching it. Anyway, I'm a Soldier myself and the less troops over there the better. It's been an unneeded strain on this country since day 1, costing the lives of several of my generation and billions of dollars of money we could really use in these hard times.

I for one really praise what Obama has done so far in his term.
