Last Airbender 2 & 3: Which Episodes?

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
Full Series Spoilers!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_episodes

So, the first Airbender movie basically adapted bits from the following episodes:

1X1 Boy in Iceberg
1X2 Avatar Returns
1X3 Southern Air Temple
1X6 Imprisoned (very briefly)
1X13 Blue Spirit
1X17 Northern Air Temple (very briefly)
1X18 Waterbending Master
1X19/20 Siege of the North

Which episodes should they adapt for the next two movies?

For Movie Two, I say open with the introduction of Toph and go from there:
2X6 Blind Bandit
1X4 Kyoshi Warriors (MNS said he'd intro them in the next movie)
2X8 The Chase (first fight with Azula)
2X10 The Library
To save time I'm sure they'll omit the entire Appa Abduction storyline...
2X13 The Drill (attack on Ba Sing Se)
2X14 City of Walls Secrets
2X17 Lake Laogai (I bet you Suki becomes the brain-washed person so they don't have to introduce Jet)
2X18 Earth King
2X19 Guru
2X20 Crossroads of Destiny

For Movie Three, I say skip the living in the Fire Nation episodes and open with the big invasion!
3X10/1 Day of Black Sun
3X6 Avatar and Firelord (some brief flashbacks of the backstory)
3X12 Western Air Temple
I doubt they'll spend the time on the prison two parter...
3X18/19/20/21 Sozin's Comet

So basically they should just do "Black Sun" and "Sozin's Comet" line for line :D

Seasons 2 & 3 really would need a lot more reworking to adapt to films.

The first thing I would do is drop the "Black Sun" angle entirely; it's a great story in the series, but with only two films, it's an unneeded false climax.

The second movie, I would get them to Ba Sing Se as early possible to set up the atmosphere there; I would introduce Toph only after they get there, by having the underground fighting circuit be in the city. Then the Dai Li bust it, and she escapes with the group, thus joining them. Simple and condensed. My main issue with adapting season two would be coming up with a decent distillation of Zuko's arc.

End the second movie with Aang grievously wounded and Ba Sing Se captured, then next movie you spend time on Aang's recovery/the Gaang hiding out in the Fire Nation while hoping to find a teacher and Zuko's disaffection. Then the two groups link up (it might also just be enough to have Zuko teach Aang firebending, and not bother with the dragons and such; it's a detour the movie probably doesn't need), and you basically do "Sozin's Comet" straight

"Black Sun" is an incredible set-piece, though. It would make a brilliant opening to the final movie, or a middle act at least.

You could never fit it into a two-hour film properly. If you start with it, you can't do Zuko's character arc; in the middle, there's no time for the firebending, etc.

If these films happen, they'd need to be epic 3-hour movies to do the story any kind of justice.

2X10 The Library

The abduction and their journey without him was very much the crux of the season.

I agree for Season 3, the failed invasion and the final showdown in Sozin's Comet.

Yeah but Appa was such a non-presence in the first movie with no personality that I don't think moviegoers will really care if he gets taken in the second one. I think they'll just go right to Bah Sing Se with him. They're clearly just going to keep Appa and Momo as background elements in the movies.

As for Zuko's arc... something tells me they won't spend much time with this. With their limited screen time they'll just focus on "Aah-ong"'s character. They'll probably show him wrestling with his loyalties in #2, and then the opening of #3 show him defect as a result of that.

On the other hand, Dev Patel is the one actor who's getting the most critical praise for the first movie, followed by Shaun Toub. And the filmmakers are probably still smarting from the racial controversies. For both those reasons, I'd think they'd be strongly motivated to play up Zuko and Iroh as much as possible in the sequels.

Besides, if you strip the A:TLA narrative to its core (as a film series has to do), it's not the story of Aang, it's the parallel stories of Aang and Zuko, the yin and yang moving toward balance. There are plenty of characters you could leave out or downplay, but Aang and Zuko both have to be at the core of it.

Yeah I was perplexed by that. I didn't think anyone was a BAD actor in the movie, but all Dev Patel did was shout a lot and look angry and sullen. I don't see why anyone is singling him out. I thought he hammed it up quite frankly... Also, Iroh was barely in the movie, didn't do much, and didn't display any of his classic sense of humor.

The box office for "The Last Airbender" despite the fan backlash against the film would seem to indicate that a sequel will be made it's made according to box office mojo 105, 806, 199 million dollars up until yesterday. I've not seen it but have read almost nothing but negative reviews from fans about who've been disappointed by his adaption. If the box office keeps up though I'm pretty sure the sequel will happen.

You mean $119 million.

With those numbers, once the foreign box office comes in, I expect it will break even with production/marketing. Whether it gets to a sequel is more doubtful (but possible, depending on studio metrics, whether they think there's room for growth, etc.).
