Attention is probably one of the more difficult human needs to express.

Yeah it's absurd that she didn't change her name. Even if her parents (and their parents, and their parents) thought "well, we shouldn't have to change our names just because this guy in the past we never met was a bastard", La'an hates her name and got bullied for it, so the idea that she wouldn't just change it is comical. The only explanation is that she likes to play life on Hard difficulty and loves having to introduce herself as Hitler to everyone she meets.

To be honest I suspect the character was conceived with that name as part of Secret Hideout's hobby of linking absolutely everything back to an existing "iconic" Trek thing, hence why Burnham is Spock's sister and visits the Mirror Universe, and why Pike, Spock and Number One boarded the Discovery, and why Picard was whisked off to the past to meet Guinan with Q and Soong and Seven of Nine and the Borg Queen there, and why now in SNW we're fighting the Gorn and going to the Amok Time arena and hanging out with Christine Chapel. It wasn't enough to create a cool and tough new security chief, she had to be connected to Khan and be a previous captive of the Gorn. Her grandma probably got eaten by the Planet Killer while visiting Trelane on the Shore Leave planet. I'm just amazed they had the restraint to stop themselves making Ortegas, one of their few all-original* characters, the daughter of Richard Daystrom or something.

    *I know, Jose Ortegas

The upshot is that SNW's rotation of weekly writers have so far shown talent, and so subsequent writers may well be able to create some fantastic stuff using La'an and her link to Khan. Plus, Chong has already emerged as one of the most impressive actors in the series, so she'll be able to sell just about any plot. But the basic premise of the character is pretty silly, yeah.

Maybe it's why they're were on the colony ship. Hoping to find a place where their name won't matter.

The character should have been named La’an Noonian Soong, and played by Brent Spiner.

What are you laughing about? I'm being serious.

Using your logic this show should be another serialized adventure like Discovery, but here we are, they're doing something different.

Don't judge the show based on the other shows. Especially when it doesn't involve the same people.

I am expecting a Khan storyline to emerge somewhere down the line. I never found the character of Khan especially interesting or engaging, too unidimensional for my liking. But I guess lot of people associate Khan as the big supervillain of the enterprise along with the Borg, so they decided to spin a character off Khan.

Which is my main complaint about SNW right now. While I have liked the episodes so far, I feel with all the familiar characters and references this feels more easter eggy. I would have liked a show that felt fresher, but with the other positives intact.

Same prodcution company, spinoff, huge funhouse turbolift etc.

Im being serious as well. Not to say im not enjoying it on some level. The 4th episode was the best of Kurtzman live trek..

Which actually means very little given that the stated purpose of the multiple shows is to have multiple flavors within Star Trek.

So, this assumption is in error and misses out on basic reports by this company. You don't like the company and I get that. Best way to demonstrate dissatisfaction is to not buy their product. Especially if we already know what their output will be, i.e. serialized adventures, funhouse turbolift, etc.

I'm trying to give it a fair chance. But they have made some big missteps that I wish they had not made. We shall see how the rest of the series pans out.

Given the comments I appreciate you are giving it a chance. I would be less inclined to describe it as fair. But, I will applaud the effort.

Regardless of the story value or importance, La'an Noonien-Singh is just a tremendously cool name that I enjoy saying out loud.

It will be such a satisfying twist when she finally changes it to “La’an Michael Bolton.”

It may take a La'an time before that occurs, however.
