Spoilers Kolvoord Starburst story arc

While I don't like the trope of close person dying and we get a flashback of them. It might work for Ortegas, it would be something similar to First Flight with Archer.

Could be a flashback to where she was red team and teaching it to lower classmen and they foul it up,

Or someone Ortegas knows dies in the maneuver in present time, maybe where she and the enterprise are attending an Academy event and it happens, and Ortegas investigates what happens. Would be a good character piece for her, learning more of her back story, which we have NONE.

You're telling me Mr. "I don't believe in no-win scenarios" wouldn't be the kind of guy who'd try to perfect the maneuver in subsequent years, even if it wasn't he who attempted it the first fatal time?

There is a huge difference between refusing to accept defeat in a crisis, and actively endangering yourself and others for no material reason.

When Kirk says, "I don't believe in a no-win scenario," he means he doesn't accept that he can't find a way to defeat his enemies or save other in a crisis. He doesn't mean he thinks he should be able to recklessly endanger people for the lolz.

And what makes you think Kirk was even a pilot?
