Kobayashi Maru Simulation

I've heard that the simulation scene at the beginning of the film. Can someone confirm that this is the case and if it is true, what prompted the re-filming of the scene?

One goof in the film that I noticed and it might have to do with the re-filming is that we see that in addition to the Senior Officers that there are other cadets besides Saavik on the bridge. However, they seem to disappear once Sulu, Uhura, Spock and McCoy "die" but then reappear when Spock tells them to go to the debriefing.

After Uhura is KIA we see the trainee non-com at the weapons station, whilst the others I'd assume would be at the stations near the front of the bridge, and since the camera is focused in on the deaths of the instructors and Saavik's response there isn't much need to see the other cadets and trainees.

Never heard anything about the scene needing to be reshot, but if they'd got all the main cast back in then I'd assume it would be easy enough to get the background characters (or even hire a few new ones for a day of shooting) back in as well.

Most of the pickups and reshoots were stuck on the end of principle photography, so they didn't have to reassemble the bulk of the cast, and the few pickups (2 days) they did later were pretty minimal.
