Knight's Haven

Blooded

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Crikey, haven't posted here in a long time. Hard to believe that my first foray into online writing started here around a decade ago!

Anyway, below is information about a new fan fiction series I'm headed up. I hope some of you decide to check it out :)

mzp_front_banner.jpg

based upon Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek

For any human in the 25th century, the ultimate dream is to join Starfleet and explore the final frontier. One human, Sebastian Knight, had a head start: he was born in space, and raised on a cargo ship.

When he joined Starfleet, Sebastian had all the tools and characteristics he needed to grow into a successful officer. So why then, almost a decade after leaving his family behind, does he find himself carrying out mundane tasks such as painting the name onto the hull of the new Enterprise?

Easy answer? He doesn't fit in. Never has, never will.

From birth, Sebastian felt like he was being moulded into something he didn't want to be. First it was his father, grooming him to inherit the family ship one day, and then it was Starfleet, trying to turn him into another by-the-book drone. The way Seb see's it, he's his own person, and lives by his own rules.

So when his world is turned upside down after some bad news from home, Sebastian can see exactly what is taking place: people are trying to control his life yet again. And as we'll soon learn, he never responds well to other people trying to shape his destiny.

For 26 years, Sebastian Knight has avoided any kind of responsibility, and coasted through life. That's all about to change, and for Sebastian and the crew of the cargo ship Haven, things will never be the same...

When the deadly Orion Syndicate target his family, Sebastian Knight has no choice but to return to the home he swore he'd never go back to: the old, and battered, cargo ship named Haven. Little does he know that his life, and the lives of those around him, are about to change forever...

Haven hasn't had a paid job in weeks, meaning supplies are starting to run low.
Sebastian knows a way to fix this, but first he needs to convince his new crew
to go along with his less than angelic plan...

This is a relaunch of a project I originally began back in 2005, and has been jazzed up to fit 2011 and beyond. All of us guys writing these episodes are Trek fans just like the rest of you, so we hope what we're releasing weekly is as much fun for you to read as it has been for us to write.

Any feedback, be it here or at our OFFICIAL FORUM, is appreciated. Hope to see some of you joining us for this exciting ride!

I've read a bit of the first story, and I admit to liking the concept and the execution in general, but personally I find the whole script-based fanfic thing to be pretty pointless - the point of a script is as a means to an end when filming something, since this and other fanfic scripts will obviously never be filmed, I'm never sure why people choose to use them to create their fanfic.

This would be so much better as a piece of prose rather than just a list of speaking parts that will never be spoken.

That said, it is good, but for me I'd rather get my teeth into a story than a script. Well done though, don't take my comments as critical of the work itself, just my own feelings about the format.

It's a completely different medium, which is why it has its contributors and readers. Some people prefer the emphasis of dialogue and sparsity over cumbersome overwritten prose. Different strokes for different folks.

As a script fic writer and reader myself, my reasons for being involved in it are two-fold: 1) because I love television and movies, so I want to recreate those as faithfully as possible. And 2) because my prose writing is terrible ;) But that's me.

The community I'm a part of (where Knight's Haven is posted), we've got a lot of people who are trying to write scripts for a career. One guy has an agent and has worked as an assistant on a couple of TV shows, a few are taking screenwriting college/uni courses, and others have sent their scripts to the BBC Writer's Room for feedback. So it stands to reason that if people really enjoy writing scripts, then a lot of people enjoy reading them.

But I think the main thing is my point #1 above: there are a lot of people that love trying to recreate the television ethos, and that wouldn't feel the same in a prose setting.

Finished the first one. It's a fun romp I'll give you that.

Haha, thank you. Hope you get a chance to give the second episode a try too :)

As for the choice of format, it's just one that I favour now, having worked in theatre and short film-making for a number of years now. We did once consider producing a prose version of the first episode though, as something of a 'bonus feature', but beyond that I've got no plans to do anything KH-related in any format other than script.

Thanks for reading!

I've read the second one, again a very tight story that feels quite episodic. The work strikes a satisfying balance between serious and light-hearted, with some bits genuinely amusing and others quite genuinely horrific at times.

Again, I do have reservations about the format and think that the work would only truly reach its potential as a piece of prose rather than 'mere' lines that will never be spoken, but even in its current format is an enjoyable and satisfying read.

Frankly this is quite a ridiculous statement. You speak as if the two choices that exist are:

1: a script
2: cumbersome, overwritten prose.

Thanks. The second episode appears to be doing well in the reviews so far, mostly for the same reasons you've given, so consider me a happy chappy :)

Next episode is out on Friday, hope you'll check it out!

Not at all. Not meant to be taken as a general statement for ALL readers and ALL fiction, just a quick sweeping remark to get across a point that prose is a very different medium and people can gravitate towards one over the other because of the styles. Not trying to start an argument over which is "better"! I don't know why you chose to ignore the rest of my post in favour of picking on one sentence. :)

NEW EPISODE!! Hope you all enjoy.

Somehow the third instalment didn't do it for me, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two.

It felt very contrived - particularly the device that allows the crew to 'listen in' on conversations across a vast tract of space (I'm not sure how this is any different from what starship com systems do already) and switching it on at the moment this Romulan ship is discussing that particular topic - it all felt a bit too manufactured if I'm honest.

Indeed the girl losing her eyesight in episode two only for the crew to happen upon this means by which she regains it in the very next episode feels a bit formulaic. Not quite a reset button but not all that far away from it.

The cliffhanger in episode two was more about Seb's poor choices than it was the fact that one of our characters was blinded. Sure, the shock impact worked as a cliffhanger, but the story was never going to be about Robyn adjusting to losing her sight. The events of this episode will be revisited though, so there will be some consequences, going forward.

Thanks for reading, just a shame you didn't enjoy it as much as the previous two episodes. Two more have come out since my last post, which I'll link to below, and we're now on a break over christmas. But, we'll be back on January 13th, with a huge episode...
